Polly Scattergood began to garner attention and acclaim in 2007 with the dreamlike single
"Nitrogen Pink" – described by the Guardian as
“...just fantastic” and by NME as
“massive” – and in 2008 with
"I Hate The Way" (both feature on the album) before her debut album arrived on Mute in the spring of 2009. The interim time between her debut single and the self-titled album had been spent gathering a live following through intimate and intriguing performances. These performances included a series of shows from the memorable Pollyworld cabin, hand built within the environs of a London festival, where she also hosted early performances by Florence and the Machine and Wild Beasts.
On her debut album, which also features the singles “Other Too Endless,” “Please Don’t Touch,” and “Bunny Club,” Polly conjured up a looking glass world where nothing is quite how it first appears to be. Produced by labelmate
Simon Fisher Turner; the influential producer, engineer, and artist
Gareth Jones (Sunroof, Liars, Depeche Mode and Apparat); and Mute’s founder
Daniel Miller, the album introduced the world to her brilliantly unsettling pop sensibilities.
Since the release of her debut in 2009, Polly has released three acclaimed albums as well as an EP titled “In The Absence Of Light” with multi-instrumentalist
Jim Sclavunos. Most recently she collaborated with
William Orbit who reworked her track “Colours Colliding” (from 2013’s
Arrows) for his latest album,
The Painter. Watch William Orbit & Polly Scattergood’s beautiful live performance of “Colours Colliding” on
Later… with Jools Holland here.
The William Orbit track followed an incredible collaboration with
Chris Liebing on his last two albums for Mute (
Burn Slow in 2018 and
Another Day in 2021). Their single was given the remix treatment from
Radio Slave earlier this month. Listen to Radio Slave’s take on “Another Day” featuring Polly Scattergood
