THE GAY ICON OF BEDROOM POP YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED.
Today, queer bedroom pop icon Legwurk (moniker for Still Woozy's Tani Kahn) announces her debut EP 'i have a bad memory' (out June 22) and shares focus track "Panic." "
On the track, Tani shares: "Panic is straight up about having panic attacks for the first time after a heartbreak last year. I remember walking around New York crying in public. And so many people asked if I was okay... It's about hope and the change of season."
It's the perfect lead single to introduce her debut EP. Rich with texture and feeling, i have a bad memory showcases Kahn's knack for writing addictive bops that blend can't-get-it-out-of-your-head bedroom pop melodies with lo-fi electronic beats. The EP starts with "Tatiana": a sentimental slow-burner chock-full of earworms and addictive guitar riffs and synth melodies that feel reminiscent of her earlier work with Still Woozy. Diving deeper into track 2, "Deep Down" is a laid-back bop that highlights Tani's stunning introspective lyrics and knack for writing chill (yet totally catchy) beats. In "Night Gown" we get a Sylvan Esso-flavored synth-pop rager perfect for getting ready for a night out. Then on "Sour PK" we get a slightly different flavor with hundreds of layers of lush, tastefully auto-tuned harmonies and perfectly syncopated drum machine beats. The EP ends on a high: "Exit Quietly" a bop that is anything but a quiet exit. Packed to the brim with dynamics and stunning, unique production choices (tape-saturated synths and husky pop-tinged vocals), "Exit Quietly" marks an end to the EP that'll make you have no choice but to listen to the whole EP again.
The EP as a whole is danceable and empowering, celebrating queerness and personal growth. Coming out just in time for Pride month, i have a bad memory is the record you'll have playing at Pride marches and beach parties, getting ready for the club or driving down the highway with your windows down. Simultaneously pop-y and chill, it's got something for everyone. A must-listen for fans of Still Woozy, Loving, Claude, Bon Iver, Clairo, and Sufjan Stevens.
On the EP, Tani shares: "I called this EP “I have a bad memory” because I easily forget things except for the really really BAD stuff. The last two years have been intense, and these songs are my way of processing all those experiences and working through the bad memories. I moved to Brooklyn, fell in love with the wrong person, had a surgery with a really tough recovery, experienced panic attacks for the first time in my life, and lost some friends too early. I also stopped getting misgendered, met some amazing queer artists, got to perform all over the world, created my most vulnerable work yet, and felt my little gay heart opening up again. All these songs are about overcoming pain and relying on seasons changing. While the songs do have a sad undertone, I hope they make people dance, feel more confident and beautiful."
Tani Kahn (Legwurk) self-produced and wrote the EP from start to finish, it was mixed by Cole Williams (Bobbing), and mastered by Justin Weiss (Trakworx) and Jake Thornton (Still Woozy). Artwork Nicole Grambo.
Having just come off playing Coachella with Still Woozy, Tani will be on tour opening for Still Woozy for another 16 shows in May 2022, and playing NYC on June 28 2022. |
