ADVANCE: Brighton's Public Body will release new EP 'Flavour Of Labour' on 4th March, digitally self-released and on 12" vinyl via Six Tonnes De Chair Records.
Recorded at Echo Zoo studios, produced by the band’s guitarist Theo Verney - known for his production work for FEET, English Teacher, FUR and Home Counties (and engineered by Christoph Skirl), vocalist and guitarist Seb Gilmore said this of the new EP: "‘Flavour Of Labour’ has a couple of different themes but it's mainly about work. At the time I had lived in Brighton for almost 10 years and for a lot of that time I'd worked pretty terrible call centre jobs. When you leave education and your first taste of full time work is working for bad companies who are either taking advantage of their employees or their customers. How can you feel good about giving 40 hours a week of your life to something like that. So heck! I'll write a song about it or like 10."
The EP opens with "Formica"; treading the line between post-punk and spiky math-rock with propulsive fluidity, the song presents a joyful battery of angular guitar work, wobbling synths and relentless percussion combining to create a foreboding backdrop for Gilmore's acute social observations.
Commenting on the track Gilmore said: "This song is about a Twitter Dad, a man who tweets financial and life advice: 'If you’re not thinking about INVESTING, CRYPTO, MAKING MONEY you’re doing it wrong.' But how do you invest if you have no money? This song is about a poor ignorant Dad who gets tricked by a Troll on Twitter, he believes everything the Twitter Dad had to say, this included taking out loans with high APR and interest rates and in turn gets his home and car repossessed by the bank."
The EP then moves into its jaunty title track, before rolling into the double hit of previously released singles - "Hard To Concentrate" and "Reset My Password".
Seemingly lost in a void of office mundanity, singer Seb Gilmore's disorientated musings on "Hard To Concentrate": ["I find it hard to concentrate / Where did I leave my? / What do you mean? / Sorry I didn’t catch that!"] are backed by screeching guitar riffs and agitated synth lines, propelled forward by drummer Thom Mills' cavernous percussion.
Bursting into focus amidst rolling percussion, searing guitars and fizzing synths, singer Seb Gilmore's affirms his appreciation for his own employment status on "Reset My Password" - whilst being distinctly aware of the trivial nature of 'adhering to company policy'. A cacophonous blast of agitated indie-punk, Public Body fuse the energy of naughties indie with the ferocity of modern post-punk to irresistible effect.
"At the height of Covid, everyone was clapping for NHS staff and key workers… and that got me thinking what my place is in all this mess. I then logged onto my work computer and was advised by a popup that it was time to reset my password. So I wrote a song about how pointless and useless my job is to the world when everything felt like it was breaking and seemed apocalyptic," Gilmore said on "Reset My Password".
The EP closes with "Sunburnt", perhaps the most melodically and politically charged track on the 5 track EP; a fitting way to see out the relentlessly energetic release.
Previously supporting acts including Squid, Dry Cleaning, The Cool Greenhouse, Do Nothing amongst others, Public Body have established themselves as one of the most formidable live acts in the country, picking up frenzied acclaim along the way from the likes of DIY Magazine, So Young Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit, Gigwise, HERO Magazine, The Forty-Five, Clash Magazine + more.
Forming in Brighton in late 2018 with a clear aim to write the perfect soundtrack to whatever you do whilst procrastinating at your day job, Public Body pick apart the mundanity of daily life and all its annoyances in irresistible fashion.
Public Body are: Seb Gilmore (guitar, vocals), Theo Verney (guitar, backing vocals), Tom Bacon (synth, backing vocals), Joe Steven (bass) and Thom Mills (drums).
Public Body's new EP ‘Flavour Of Labour’ will be self-released on 4th March, and will be available to purchase on 12" vinyl via Six Tonnes De Chair Records. |
