Peel reveals second single “Catch & Release” and video from their debut self titled EP, due October 16th via Innovative Leisure. The song captures the perspective of two lovers acknowledging the suffering of the world, trying to push forward, hand in hand, together. FLOOD who debuted the track describe, “...there’s a sense of disorientation and detachment, and Cimino’s vocals—which are reminiscent of Paul Banks’ in Turn on the Bright Lights—are like a guiding light.”

Catch & Release” was the final song recorded during Peel's mixing process in Domino’s Pico Union studio in Los Angeles. Inspired by Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express,” Peel - in stark contrast - layered lush guitars inspired by Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie over the pulsing, mechanical rhythm. Sean Cimino’s vocal performance was captured in one take while reacting to the instrumental being looped at a high volume over the monitors. Innis elaborates, “There’s an energy and transcendence in live performance that we’re trying to capture, having the sound reverberate through the room, even if there’s bleed, embracing it and letting it color the take.” Cimino adds, “The lyrics were born out of dream logic. There’s a melancholy beauty captured.”

The single is accompanied by a hallucinatory video directed and written by Carlson YoungInnis’ wife, and art directed by Peel. She wrote the video treatment pre-COVID but quickly adapted to the confined times - Young shot the video in the middle of a Texas lightning storm with only a flashlight and a phone. “I was really inspired the second I heard the track. It’s so romantic. I wanted to create a suspended world shrouded in darkness, light infiltrating through trees and the energy of two people in love. Peel has such a strong visual identity that I was really excited to contribute to, and Sean’s unique way of manipulating footage is something I couldn’t wait to see."

Peel - Catch & Release (Official Video)
Peel is the musical partnership of Sean Cimino and Isom Innis; both multi-instrumentalists, as well as a visual artist and producer respectively. The project was born from a month-long recording session between the two artists within Innis’s concrete loft, above The Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The cavernous space served as an industrial incubator for musical experimentation: where fleets of sewing machines once reverberated in the 1930s with metallic rhythms, now echoed the sounds of drums, amps, and modular synthesizers.

The two create a wall of sound paired with a hypnotic groove that takes you out of your head and into a moment. “We are obsessed with records like Second Edition (Public Image Ltd.) and The Pleasure Principle (Gary Numan); records where spirit and improvisation guide expression.

Peel is as much of a visual project as it is a sonic one. They enlisted the aid of graphic designer and art director Taylor Giali who documented the duo through arrays of photographs and hazy analogue-video; manufacturing a familiar yet distinct visual language. Along with the EP’s artwork, Galili joined forces with photographer Robbie Jeffers to create Broadcast 006 -- an interactive performance video filmed during a live studio performance of Peel’s first single “Rom-Com."
