Sparks sing our minds with "I'm Toast"

SPARKS RELEASE “I’M TOAST”

NEW SONG PRECEDES POP PIONEERS’ UPCOMING 24TH STUDIO ALBUM

A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP ARRIVES EVERYWHERE ON FRIDAY, MAY 15
“With quirky melodies and a uniquely clever songwriting style, Sparks has remained one of the most innovative art-pop bands of the past three decades…Sparks' peculiar brand of pop smarts has influenced everything from '80s synth-pop to Queen.”
– NPR

“Few bands will ever reach the half-century mark, and fewer still could manage the
looking so blasé as Sparks. They watch time pass with wry distance
adopting musical fashions like visitors from a parallel dimension.”
– Pitchfork

“Had it not been for Sparks and their innovative sounds during the 1970s, there's a good possibility that 1980s New Wave music would have never existed…These days, every new alternative and indie rock band that comes up owes a huge musical debt to the Maels.”
 – Forbes

Groundbreaking pop icons Sparks – Ron and Russell Mael – have announced today’s release of their spectacular new song. “I’m Toast” is available now via BMG at all DSPs and streaming services. The band also has created a lyric video which is available now.

"A cheerful tune for our cheerful times...I'm toast,” say the Maels.

“I’m Toast” precedes Sparks’ upcoming 24th studio album, A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP, due via BMG on Friday, May 15. Pre-orders are available now, with all pre-orders joined by instant grat downloads of “I’m Toast” and the album’s acclaimed first track release, “Self Effacing.” A number of formats are on offer, including CD, 2x heavyweight colored and picture disc vinyl, and cassette; limited exclusives include signed prints, deluxe CD book editions, and a very special Sparks beret. PRE-ORDER A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP

“Self Effacing” arrived last month, accompanied by an official lyric video streaming now via YouTube. The track was immediately named a “Song You Need To Know” by Rolling Stone, writing, “Who but Sparks would release a bombastic song about being modest? ‘Self-Effacing’ is just what you’ve come to expect from the art-rock duo: grand vocals, dramatic music, and pure camp…An anthem for introverts everywhere, it’s a strong kickoff for the band, whose last album, HIPPOPOTAMUS, dropped in 2017.”

LISTEN TO “SELF-EFFACING”

Last year saw Sparks first heralding A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP with the festive album track, “Please Don’t Fuck Up My World.” The track received worldwide applause upon its pre-Christmas release, with Uncut declaring it to be “a plaintive message of hope, expressed in Sparks’ own, inimitable way.” “The one and only Sparks are back with a brand new single that feels very of the moment,” raved Brooklyn Vegan. “While ‘Please Don’t Fuck Up My World’ doesn’t name names, lyrics like All that you are pursuing / please don’t fuck up my world / can’t you see what you’re doing are clearly aimed at the head of state of your choice. Russell and Ron Mael using a children’s choir in the chorus underlines things nicely.”

Now entering their sixth decade, Sparks will celebrate A STEADY DRIP, DRIP, DRIP with a brief series of European live dates, to be followed next year by an epic 2021 world tour. This year will also see the eagerly awaited premiere of Annette, the first English-language film from groundbreaking French director Leos Carax (Holy MotorsPola X), written by Ron and Russell Mael and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. In addition, director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) is putting the final touches to his long-in-the-making Sparks documentary, an as-yet-untitled feature-length film celebrating this singular band.
