April 11, 2018 - Today, Birds of Chicago share their new song "Never Go Back", from the forthcoming album Love in Wartime, available on Signature Sounds Recordings May 4.The track premiered by way of All Music.
"This is our summer jam for interesting times," says Alli Russell, "our 'Bombs over Baghdad' or 'Rock the Casbah.'"
The upbeat track centers on moving on from "faded constellations" and "lost tears"; an ode to leaving unpleasant memories in the past, leading with the resounding affirmation "never go back." This is not a time for contemplation, but one that requires all hearts on deck and full immersion in the present moment. With "Never Go Back" Birds of Chicago deliver that wake-up call in an incredibly catchy 3-minute dance-floor wrecker.
As the second release from the new album, "Never Go Back" follows the lead single "Roll Away", which public radio can't get enough of, according to NPR who shared "we can almost see a full audience on their feet in a live show, singing and dancing along," adding "["Roll Away"] celebrates change, with all its painful revelations and inevitable doubt." Led by JT Nero and Allison Russell, Birds of Chicago are known for their seamless combination of rock n roll meets "near perfect Americana" (No Depression). Nero and Russell recently recorded Love in Wartime, an album envisioned as a cinematic rock n roll suite, with producer Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars)at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago. During the band's recent interview with Chicago Tribune, music critic Greg Kot expressed that the new album "channels the band's increasingly volatile energy as a live act while upholding its penchant for soul-searching lyrics."
Birds of Chicago began in 2012 when Nero started writing for his vocal star-muse, Russell. Both were accomplished singer/songwriters with projects of their own, Nero with JT and the Clouds and Russell with the acclaimed Canadian roots outfit Po' Girl, but together there was an unmistakable chemistry. Music this raw and soul-rich demands to be experienced live, and Birds of Chicago have developed a fervent following, touring 200 nights a year since their formation.
