LA group Automatic released their third album Is It Now? in 2025 via Stones Throw. A collection of razor-sharp ‘deviant pop’ tracks which balance irreverence with sharp commentary, Is It Now? demands we look at the world’s oppressive structures with fresh urgency. Perky minimalist grooves and affable pop melodies are a Trojan horse for Automatic to wheel in playful political commentary about everything from the political influence of Big Oil to the military industrial complex – songs whose lyrics seem to grow more apt with each passing week.
Now, legendary producer and “fourth Beastie Boy” Mario C reinterprets the album cut “Don’t Wanna Dance”. It’s not quite a remix, but it’s not not a remix, either. Automatic says Mario C “was so much fun to work with, as we have been fans of his since we were little tiny babies boppin’ around to ‘Check Your Head’”.
Automatic is also announcing a huge tour, their first dates since opening for LCD Soundsystem in late 2025. They’ll play at Kilby Block Party before heading across the US with The Last Dinner Party in May and June, then after Outside Lands they’ll visit the UK and Europe for festivals and select headline shows. US headline dates will be announced soon.
