Singer-songwriter, composer, and performer Peter Salett—described by The New York Times as a “winsome pop poet” and hailed by TimeOut NY as a “downtown legend”—returns with his most immersive work to date: the long-awaited double album Suite for the Summer Rain / Dance of the Yellow Leaf, out July 11th.
First known nationally for his breakout song “Heart of Mine” in Edward Norton’s Keeping the Faith (2000), Salett became a fixture of New York City’s downtown music scene in the '90s, with his music later featured in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Down in the Valley. After leaving LA and returning to Brooklyn, Salett began writing Suite for the Summer Rain in 2011, and began crafting its companion piece Dance of the Yellow Leaf in 2014, a meditative collection of music and sounds.
Following the project's lead single, “Waitin’ on a Rainstorm,” a lush and cinematic reflection on the subtle shift before a summer downpour, Salett is sharing, "Suddenly the Leaves," an equally enchanting contemplation on the changing of seasons and the fleeting nature of time, arriving on May 28th. With Salett’s warm, soothing vocals and delicate guitar, later joined by sweeping strings, this folk-classical piece recalls his past as a film score composer. “Suddenly the Leaves” evokes the timeless intimacy of artists like Simon & Garfunkel or Labi Siffre, where a familiar, inviting voice draws us into a moment both personal and universal—rich with poetic, visual storytelling.
Salett on the track, "The line “suddenly the leaves are on the ground / no one seemed to see them coming down” came to me as I rounded the corner coming home one day, and it was as if the season had snuck up on me and I was somehow, suddenly, in a different place. I also sing about “holding on to beauty as it burns/ so bright” and the knowledge that despite our best efforts time will keep moving, both giving us distance from emotional scars but also that whatever we love in the moment is ephemeral. This was the first song I wrote for what became Dance of the Yellow Leaf." |
