SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE has announced a new album, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING, for August 23rd via Saddle Creek. Softer around the edges than their past, more angular work, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING is generational, an album as emotionally wrought as it is sonically progressive. Their last release, 2023’s i’m so lucky EP, explored the breakup between Zack Schwartz and Rivka Ravede, setting the stage and emotional territory for the band’s fifth record, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING. This latest offering is the most crystallized version of the band’s aesthetic, a continued meditation on the end of relationships and the unsteadiness that follows. It is a meticulous, beautiful, and quietly heartbreaking collection of songs.

Today, you can hear the album’s first single, “LET THE VIRGIN DRIVE,” a genuinely frightening pop track that anchors itself on Japanese City pop samples and a demented news clip of someone screaming. “It’s about unrequited love and making up a situation or whole life in your head,” says Schwartz of its thematic underpinning. “The other person finally ‘sees you’ and your ‘problems are solved,’ but they aren’t, really.” The song is accompanied by an equally unsettling Daniel Patrick Brennan (Tierra Whack, Body Meat, Summer Walker) video featuring all three members throughout. The director notes "A video about trying to cure your loneliness through material means, courage, impulsivity, and chopping your finger off after cutting an avocado."

Four vinyl variants will be available on street date, including the “derelict house” variant that is bundled with two numbered prints from Rivka Ravede of SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, available exclusively from Saddle Creek and limited to 500 copies. Pre-save and pre-order YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING at https://sotb.scfm.me/lose

The band has also announced a US tour in support of the album. Kicking off September 24th at Boston’s Brighton Music Hall, the 22-date tour will hit Detroit, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, DC and more before wrapping up November 9th for a hometown show at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer. Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday at 10:00am local time. Support on the tour will include Winter and Kassie Krut (ex-Palm) on select dates.

For the past decade, SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE has honed an aesthetic like no other. They’ve chopped up samples, chewed them up, spit them back out again, baby-birded it. Across four albums and a smattering of EPs, Zack Schwartz, Corey Wichlin, and Rivka Ravede have fully solidified their stance as some of rock’s weirdest and best deconstructionists. 2018’s Hypnic Jerks was a study in noise punk sampledelia. It was a breakthrough for the band. Frank Ocean became a fan, spinning “fell asleep with a vision” on Blonded Radio. 2021’s ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH was nasty dream pop by way of K-Mart realism and hitting the channel search setting on an old TV set. The album received critical acclaim across the board with Pitchfork’s Best New Music honors, as well as praise and support from The New York Times, FADER, Stereogum, and more and inclusion in Year End Lists with Pitchfork, Stereogum, Paste, FADER, SPIN among others.
