After a 7-year hiatus, New York alt electro-pop duo MS MR, best known for their top 10 hit "Hurricane," are back with one last musical offering, "Saturn Return", including a gorgeous and intimate roller coaster ride of a music video here. The independent release also features a cover of Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" and celebrates the 10-year anniversary of their debut album Secondhand Rapture

Comprised of Lizzy Plapinger (LPX, Neon Gold Records) and Max Hershenow (alexmaax), MS MR made global waves in the 2010s with their albums Secondhand Rapture (2012) and How Does It Feel (2015). Notorious for their signature blend of dark electro currents, undeniable pop hooks, and haunting atmospheres, they garnered equal attention for their style and surreal candy-colored gothic aesthetics, made iconic in video collaborations with creative powerhouses like Luke Gilford, Austin Peters, BRTHR, Tyler Kolhoff, Mafalda Millies, and Tabitha Denholm. Their infectious and electrifying live performances led to multiple sold-out headline tours around the globe, as well as international festival slots like the main stage at Coachella, Glastonbury, and Splendour in the Grass. MS MR’s music was used extensively in TV and film including Game of Thrones and the Oscar award-winning The Room and their song “Dark Doo Wop” was sampled by Snoop Dogg on “Daddy” of his latest record.

A few key MS MR songs/videos:
“Bones” their first song release + used in Game of Thrones trailer
“Hurricane” original self-made video
“Hurricane” official music video by Luke Gilford
“Fantasy” official music video by Austin Peters
“Wrong Victory” official music video with Mafalda Millies
"Dark Doo Wop" sampled by Snoop Dog on his 2022 album

MS MR explains: “When we realized we were coming up on the ten-year anniversary of our first album, “Secondhand Rapture,” we knew we wanted to do SOMETHING. It felt like the right time to finally bring the band to a formal end while also celebrating and thanking our fans and each other for such an exciting and meaningful time in our lives.

We made “Secondhand Rapture," mostly in secret, in Max’s closet-turned-studio in Bed-Stuy during the hours before and after our day jobs. While it was eventually mixed at the legendary Electric Lady Studios by Tom Elmhirst (Amy Winehouse, Adele, Florence, Arcade Fire, LCD etc) and released on Columbia Records, the album was originally written and recorded by the two of us on a cheap mic and laptop for just $500. It was born from friendship, creative naïveté, a shared love of pop music, and the hum of anxiety induced by a sense of impending apocalypse (little did we know the degree to which that would escalate in the years to come). “Secondhand Rapture” took us from creative dreamers to realized artists, from small hometown shows in New York to venues, festivals and radio stations all over the world.

Looking back, it’s clear that MS MR taught us to trust our instincts and vision, and to meet those impulses with play, curiosity, and dedication. That ethos has gone on to be a crucial blueprint for each of us in our own work and lives.

With an enormous amount of gratitude, we’re ready to move on from the MS MR project – we've each developed into new people with expanded ambitions, interests and tastes. But we’re excited and committed to continuing to be a part of one another's personal and creative lives. So while this is the end of the band, it’s not the end of our collaboration on each other's work as LPX and alexmaax. Our new, final single “Saturn Return” is a promise of that.

We hope this last musical offering as MS MR gives you the sense of joy and closure it brought us. Thank you for letting us into your lives – it changed the course of ours forever.”

About “Saturn Return” they say: “In celebration of the 10 year anniversary of “Secondhand Rapture,” we initially intended to rework something from that record or an old demo from that era. But as we started working, we found ourselves caught up in the joy of reuniting as friends, reveling in the opportunity to share how much we had grown as individuals and artists, and finding an even greater appreciation for what we had created and achieved during our heyday.

Ultimately, it felt more authentic and exciting to create something new that would reflect and celebrate exactly that. It was surprisingly effortless and cathartic to fall back into creative synergy with one another, even after all this time. We found the elements that defined our signature sound remained intact but felt deepened, honed and refreshed by the experience we’ve gained since we started making music together in 2010.

The result is “Saturn Return,” a sparkling atmospheric pop bop, infused with touches of 90s electro vibes, and adorned with shimmering vocals that reflect on the beauty of continuously being drawn back to someone in our lives time and time again. More personally, it’s a love note to each other, and a commitment to lifelong friendship.”

About covering “Flagpole Sitta” they add: “Covers have always been an integral part of MS MR. The first song we ever recorded was a version of "Time of my Life" by Patrick Wolf, which helped give us the language and confidence to explore making original music of our own. Once we started playing live, we regularly incorporated covers like LCD Soundsystem's "Dance Yrself Clean," Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know," and Miike Snow's "Genghis Khan" into our sets. They’ve always been a source of play and connection for us, and a chance to connect with fans over music we all love.

To be honest, “Flagpole Sitta," was a pretty spontaneous choice. Lizzy found herself consistently returning to it during the pandemic for its lyrical narrative and nostalgia, but it was Max who quickly realized that its melodies, harmonies, and lyrics all felt like something we might have written. It was wildly fun to make, as evident in its bombast and energy, and it feels right to end our time as a band with a cover, just like we playfully began!”
