(September 6, 2023) - Molly Burch shares the third offering, "Tattoo," from her upcoming album Daydreamer out September 29th via Captured Tracks. The song is dedicated to her late best friend, Lena, and is an ethereal ballad featuring sweeping harp and backup vocals from Hannah Kim (Luna Li). Accompanying the song is a video created by Burch and Lena's sister.

Molly shares about the process of writing the song, "I wrote this song for my best friend Lena who passed away when we were 19. She was truly the most special person I've ever known. It's hard to describe her. She was the most fearless, daring person who did anything for a laugh. For example, on our senior year scavenger hunt she got a teacher's name tattoo'd on her ass. That isn't the tattoo I'm referring to on this song, though. Before she passed she got a symbol on her breast bone that meant 'no fear.' After she passed I decided to get the same tattoo in the same place so I would always have her close to my heart and remember to not be afraid. I wrote this song for her because Daydreamer is about my relationship to music and she was the first person I played music with. I hope it does her justice."

Molly adds about bringing the music video to life, "For the music video, I collaborated with Lena's sister Mia --who I am deeply close with. We wanted to show footage of Lena and paint a picture of what she was like. We added in public domain footage of nature and visuals that reminded us of her. The line in the song 'I wanna tell you it's okay, even though it's crazy, you wouldn't believe it, I think you would hate it' refers to how much she's missed since she's passed. Social media, climate disasters -- as much as I wish she was here today, I think she would have had a really hard time with modern life. She had a severely sensitive soul. I added footage of wildfires, earthquakes, and water pollution to represent what I was saying with this line. I hope this song reaches people who have experienced great loss and can be a comfort to them. I share this with love."

Having recently relocated to her hometown of Los Angeles, the beginnings of her latest album came together after Burch found her old diaries from age 13 and younger. Renowned for her captivating vocals and vivid depictions of love and loss, Molly takes on a new form in Daydreamer, focusing on the relationship she has with herself as well as the personal highs and lows that inform her self-identity.

Daydreamer boasts a sharper, much cleaner production approach and a bit more pop than Burch’s previous records, thanks to producer Jack Tatum. Molly shares, “I had worked with Jack before on our co-written song ‘Emotion’ that we put out in 2020. When deciding who would produce Daydreamer I knew I wanted it to be Jack as soon as I started writing. We have similar taste and sensibilities and I look up to him so much.” There are Japanese city pop inspirations, horns, strings, and more ballads, with a throughline of Molly’s masterful, shimmering vocals taking center stage. The result is music that feels stirring and sweeping, pulling in sounds and influences of the past, while also propelling Burch into a further development of herself as an artist.

Burch will also be heading on a North American tour across 18 cities starting in the birthplace of her last three albums Austin, Texas and finishing in her hometown of Los Angeles with support from Christelle Bofale. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.
