NORTH AMERICAN TOUR KICKS OFF OCTOBER 12TH

MORNING EDITION (NPR): "With his second LP — Struggler — Owusu takes an ambitious step forward... His debut album decisively conquered his adopted country... Now, with 'Struggler,' Owusu's set his sights on the rest of the world."

NPR MUSIC: “a breathless convergence of disco and punk in the work of Genesis Owusu... it's a really exciting release that expands the possibility of hip hop"

CONSEQUENCE - CoSign Artist of the Month: "STRUGGLER doesn’t ask you to dance the pain away or embrace distraction until it’s all over, but rather invites you to examine the very source of your anxieties and to try to have fun while doing so... a metaphorical guide to keep pushing onward"

ALTERNATIVE PRESS: "(STRUGGLER) offers a new iteration of Genesis Owusu, who is growing into the spotlight with tact and grace, understanding both himself and his audience better with each new chapter — while remaining as complex and cerebral in sound and form as ever."

NYLON: "Genesis Owusu has opened for Paramore, Khurangbin, and Thundercat so that should give you an idea about his arena-sized, between-punk-and-rap energy."

HOTNEWHIPHOP: "The Ghana-born and Australian-raised idiosyncratic artist is no stranger to thinking outside the box, and that is no different on STRUGGLER... The beats and production choices are vibrant and feature lots of different drum patterns."

PASTE MAGAZINE: "The record explores fear and spiritual survival, and it is sure to solidify Owusu as one of our very best curators of the intersection between technicolor sonic vibrancy and methodical, introspective lyricism."

NME (4-star review): “an artist at the top of his game… Owusu’s stylistic choices are both unexpected and impressive, visiting all corners of his eclectic taste”

FLOOD MAGAZINE: "’STRUGGLER’ confirms Owusu is a master storyteller capable of creating complex narratives that are consistently interesting, engaging, and fun to listen to."

BROOKLYN VEGAN: "putting his unique spin on Prince-like synth-funk"

UPROXX: “The musician’s latest single from his forthcoming Struggler album, ‘Tied Up!,’ amplifies his striking artistry.”

KEXP: "an expansive blend of post-punk, R&B, funk, hip hop and other styles, featuring an often-densely produced sound with energetic, often-dance friendly rhythms, memorable song hooks and lyrics of anxiety, depression and trying to survive dystopian times."

EXCLAIM! (8 / 10 review): “Genesis Owusu is a star… with Struggler, he's proven that he's a singular talent, overcoming the sophomore slump and putting the world on notice”

NORTHERN TRANSMISSIONS"Owusu follows his instincts. And with yet another inventive album under his belt, he proves he is on the right path"

TREBLEZINE: ""It’s a relentlessly deceptive and sonically curious album, as Owusu’s 11 compositions here extend and transcend hip-hop traditions. He and his studio crew feel at ease dropping tuneful bars in front of synth-funk and martial post-punk stomps."

Genesis Owusu released his acclaimed sophomore album, STRUGGLER this summer via OURNESS / AWAL. The album is a bold soundtrack to uncertain times and features widely acclaimed singles Leaving the Light,” Tied Up! and Stay Blessed.” Today, he was nominated for seven ARIA Awards -- Australia's highest music honor -- including "Album of the Year" and "Best Solo Artist," making him the artist with the most nominations in 2023. These follow his 2021 win for Artist of the Year for his debut album Smiling with No Teeth -- Read more via Billboard.

After launching onto the global map with his critically acclaimed debut album, Smiling with No Teeth, Owusu now steps forth with an 11-track narrative journey which Owusu simply states is “a story about a Roach, that runs and runs, trying not to get stepped on by God.” After doing his own soul searching, Owusu combed his eclectic taste to form a cohesive, concept-driven project where post-punk blends poetry, theater, garage rock, funk rock, hip-hop and heavy soul. Partly inspired by Owusu’s readings of philosopher Albert Camus, novelist Franz Kafka and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, the record paints a portrait using genres like shades of paint, freely exploring topics of resilience, hope, doubt, as well as the most basic of human questions: what’s the point?

Owusu is also set to bring his vibrant live show to North America this fall for a headline tour in support of STRUGGLER. The tour follows his arena dates this spring supporting Paramore. He has also previously given notable performances at North American festivals including LollapaloozaAustin City LimitsBoston CallingOsheaga Festival and This Ain’t No Picnic, and performed support shows with Glass AnimalsKhruangbin and Thundercat in the US and Tame Impala in Australia.
