Explosions In The Sky have released End, their first album in seven years, via longtime label Temporary Residence Ltd. As demonstrated by the rapturously received advance singles “Ten Billion People,” “Moving On,” and “Loved Ones,” End is arguably the grandest Explosions In The Sky album to date – melding the quiet restraint and crushing weight of their early recordings with the aural exploration and ornate experimentation of their later works all the while incorporating skills and insights gleaned from their increasingly deep film and television scoring experiences. While End was inspired by darkness, it became a loud, dramatic, wild rumination on life and death. “Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship,” state the band. “Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next.” The band, long renowned for their cathartic and euphoric live shows, kick off their 26-city intercontinental The End Tour tonight in Houston. In honor of their humble beginnings, when they got early and important opportunities to act as a local opening band for big touring artists like Fugazi and Built To Spill, the band elected to have the promoters of each concert select local opening acts rather than selecting one established support band for the entire tour. The artists range from the notable (FACS, Maserati, Lifeguard) to those just getting their start - find a full list of dates and support acts for the US leg below. Over nearly 25 years of being a band (with the same lineup the entire time), Explosions In The Sky have achieved remarkable critical and commercial success while making an especially non-commercial style of music – having sold nearly two million albums worldwide and scored five major motion pictures to date. They’ve become the sound of modern sports films, documentaries and television series – due largely to their genre-defining Friday Night Lights score – and have found a diverse array of major artists as fans as well, having been invited to tour with Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab for Cutie, and many others. |
