Composer, performer, and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Academy Award & GRAMMY-nominated composer, producer, and singer Emile Mosseri have shared the second part of their two part album I Could be Your Dog / I Could be Your Moon, out today via Ghostly International. Together, the prequel I Could Be Your Dog (released September of last year) and the sequel I Could Be Your Moon integrate into a holistic body of work that flows effortlessly track to track, panning through textural vignettes constructed using synthesizer, piano, electronics, and vocals.
Guiding listeners through dream-like and ethereal reveries, the album evokes the bittersweet sense of something too bright or rare to last, a short-lived glimpse into a golden hour. Each track encompasses unique components of the pair’s extensive repertoire of skills, from the ever rising complexities of “Standing In Your Light,” to the atmospheric closer, “Radio Replacement.” About their process, Mosseri notes, “That's one of the things that was so special about this collaboration, it felt like we were writing music through one another.” Smith details, “In our collaboration we talked about the idea of needing a catalyst, or inspiration coming from a reaction to something, like when you think you hear a friend say something, and they said something else, but what you thought you heard was actually something that you wrote, that you generated, and had a clear channel to grab it because your sense of self didn't get in the way.” The resulting body of work is completely unique from anything the two have done before.
Smith’s work as a producer and composer has pushed the boundaries of experimental music and amassed critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR Music, The New York Times and more. Mosseri has collaborated with artists such as Angel Olsen, Haxan Cloak and scored multiple award-winning and notable films, most recently Minari, Kajillionaire and The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Smith and Mosseri realized they were neighbors in Los Angeles and met up for a few hikes before the pandemic began to separate the world. Both had been mutual admirers of each other's work, however, it was not until Smith had moved away that a collaboration between the two artists began to materialize. Despite the physical distance between Smith and Mosseri, their virtual connection sparked a friendship and musical exchange over email, the exercise becoming the framework for their eventual first song together, “Log In Your Fire”. From there, the pair composed a series of musical foundations, trading files from afar throughout 2020. While the origins were formed from a distance, the project finds the two artists coming together in real time in Los Angeles and completing the cycle.
