Today, Danish composer, musician, and producer Trentemøller shares his dichotomous new single + video, “All Too Soon.” The track is the latest to be revealed from his upcoming album Memoria, set for release in early 2022 via his own label, In My Room. A master of melding melody with the ethereal, Trentemøller’s “All Too Soon” is a sensory sojourn that lives in the fleeting space where transience and the terrestrial meet. Dry drums meet headlong with sumptuous reverb trails, feedback stabs antagonize lush passages, and whip cracks of spring reverb commingle with tambourine as percussive flourishes, all directed by a simple, circular guitar figure that pivots to a majestic bell peal at the chorus.

“All Too Soon”: Watch / Listen

Once again, longtime collaborator Lisbet Fritze’s elegantly commanding voice, last heard on September’s dreamy “In The Gloaming,” delivers the narrative in a clear expression of unanimity with Trentemøller’s music and lyrics. Examining ostensibly diametric relationships of both light and dark, life and death, day and night, love and hate, “All Too Soon” presents them as dualistic and symbiotic, influencing each other as they interrelate. By the time the song abruptly implodes, we’re left with a feeling that, while it is guaranteed we will all eventually shake off this mortal coil, maybe our time here is just an interstitial part of an eternal arc, masquerading as a finite frame.

Anders Trentemøller’s sixth studio album seems to exist at the confluence of inspiration, coincidence, and maybe even a little bit of the supernatural. A recent, unanticipated drop of four songs, in the form of two singles (“No One Quite Like You” and “Golden Sun”), might leave one surprised to find that a full album’s worth of material was also waiting in the wings. As with most Trentemøller releases, it’s a body of songs that are thematically linked by many melodic threads. Fully assembled, it presents itself as a new form of electronic space pop, complete with elements of longing and solemnity.

Trentemøller’s 2019 album Obverse was an exercise in what could be done if the prospect of performing the songs onstage wasn’t a factor. It opened up some doors, and signaled a new chapter. Memoria, even considering its resplendence, almost feels like it demands to be presented live as well.
