London-based musician and artist Daniel Blumberg today announces details for his debut feature film score, The World To Come, set for release on vinyl and CD on January 14.

Listen to the title song by Daniel Blumberg and American singer-songwriter Josephine Foster here.

The score will be available on double clear vinyl and CD featuring two exclusive solo interpolations of the musical themes by legendary free-jazz saxophonist/clarinettist Peter Brötzmann. Pre-order here.

The World To Come (directed by Mona Fastvold) premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. It stars Oscar-nominated actress Vanessa Kirby (The CrownPieces of a Woman) and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice), with Christopher Abbott and Casey Affleck in supporting roles.

Set on a farm in upstate New York in the 1850s, the film is a frontier romance in which Abigail (Katherine Waterson), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor, Tallie (Vanessa Kirby), find themselves powerfully and irrevocably drawn to each other.

Blumberg has created a bold score for the film which captures the passionate intensity of the lovers’ romance against a backdrop of extreme physical hardship in an unforgiving rural landscape.

Co-produced with Peter Walsh (Scott Walker), Blumberg enlisted an ensemble of internationally revered avant-garde musicians including Peter Brötzmann (clarinet), Josephine Foster (voice), Ute Kanngiesser (cello), Steve Noble (cowbells), Yoni Silver (clarinet), Billy Steiger (violin), Alex Ward (clarinet), and Tom Wheatley (double bass). Together they created an evocative sound palette which moves dynamically from poignant, melodic motifs representing Abigail and Tallie’s characters, to extreme dissonance and textural experimentation, as the harshness of the elements and Tallie’s husband’s vindictive jealousy come to challenge the lovers’ growing connection.

Talking about the score, Blumberg explains, “it was a huge challenge to retain the unique qualities of improvised music within the structure of cinema, but that friction is something that excited me about working in this context.”

Blumberg will be performing a rare and intimate live concert at “FRAMES of REPRESENTATION” – the London ICA’s international film festival dedicated to the cinema of the real – which returns from November 25 to December 4. More information available here.

The soundtrack to The World To Come is released digitally by Node Records/Wise Music Group.
