Danish, London based artist Marie Dahlstrom today (18th February 2020) officially announces her long-awaited debut album, ‘Like Sand’. Featuring contributions from the likes of South London singer James Vickery, California based songwriter and producer Jeremy Passion, Brooklyn based singer/producer Elijah Fox, British guitarist Beau Diako and more – the album will be released May 22nd, 2020.
Moving to London 6 years ago – Dahlstrom is now well known for her warm, jazz-tinged, soulful R&B. Following previous releases with the likes of Tom Misch and Alfa Mist, the past 12 months have seen Marie writing and producing the songs that would eventually form the debut album announced today – ‘Like Sand’.
Dahlstrom is also today releasing new single and album title track ‘Like Sand’, featuring British guitarist Beau Diako. Based around a chord progression Marie had originally written at her parents house in Denmark – the new single lyrically stands as a word to the wise; some cautionary advice, perhaps.
‘Like Sand’ is a song about fear”, Marie explains. “It’s about caring about someone - but expressing it in the wrong way - the fear of losing. It is something I think a lot of people can relate to; either being treated this way - or treating someone this way. Fundamentally, it is very human to fear loss, but holding on to someone too tight, will only make them hold on to you a little less. With this song, I hope that people who are treating their loved ones this way will meet this behaviour and feeling with patience, awareness and willingness to change."
Delicately uniting elements of R&B, jazz and hip-hop, ‘Like Sand’ is Marie Dahlstrom at her best. A groove-laden rhythm section guides proceedings, with Marie’s stunning vocals taking centre-stage amidst her uplifting piano movements - all complemented by Beau Diako’s sophisticated, impressive guitar work.
Speaking a little on their work together, Beau Diako said: “Marie is one of the most hard working musicians I’ve met and it’s always inspiring to make music with her. The song came about over a few sessions last year and with help from our talented friends David Thornton, Conor Albert, DanDiggas and Kasia Kawalek. Very proud of what we made together and excited for people to finally hear it!”
Brought up on some of soul and R&B’s greats; recalling the likes of Edwyn Collins, Womack & Womack and Gloria Gaynor being on regular rotation in her family home in Roskilde, Dahlstrom also cites the discoveries of Dwele, Dire Straits, Erykah Badu, Kirk Franklin and Fleetwood Mac in her teenage years as key points of inspiration in her musical upbringing.
Recorded between LA, Copenhagen and London – ‘Like Sand’ features collaborations with the likes of South London soul singer James Vickery, California based songwriter and producer Jeremy Passion, Brooklyn based singer/producer Elijah Fox, British guitarist Beau Diako – and more.
Previously supported and praised by the likes of Billboard, NYLON, Complex, and Wonderland Magazine, as well as radio airplay from BBC 1Xtra DJ’s Jamz Supernova, DJ Target, Toddla T and Rinse FM’s Jyoty, Marie has been patient with her career – carefully plotting and building towards her first full length body of work.
“Music is my identity,” says Marie. “It’s what I’m most proud of. I hope there will be something for everyone with these new songs, and I hope that people will find comfort, and maybe feel more of themselves whilst they listen.”
Marie Dahlstrom’s new single ‘Like Sand’ is out now. Dahlstrom’s debut album ‘Like Sand’ is out May 22nd, 2020.
