WELCH TO BE HONORED WITH UNC’S THOMAS WOLFE PRIZE ON OCTOBER 2ND

CURRENTLY ON “AN EVENING WITH GILLIAN WELCH” TOUR
“There’s no contemporary artist who performs American roots music with more authenticity than Welch.”

“Her smoky Appalachian porch moan has never sounded deeper, realer or sexier.”

“…it's pretty much perfect.”

Gillian Welch’s celebrated fourth studio album, 2003’s Soul Journey, is available today for the first time ever on vinyl via her own Acony Records. The long awaited first pressing of Soul Journey, which The A.V. Club hailed as “raw, spare, direct, and achingly pretty,” contains some of her most beloved songs, including “Look At Miss Ohio,” "Wayside/Back In Time” and “Wrecking Ball”. Of the release the duo say: “As with the analog version of The Harrow & The Harvest, this pressing reveals a wealth of fidelity and contains atmospheric nuances that were missing from the original CD release. The surprise here was how much these changes intensified the emotional experience of the album for us. It was like opening an old scrapbook and seeing the photos inside come to life. Soul Journey has finally arrived.” Soul Journey was mastered directly from the original tapes through custom Ortofon amplifiers to a Neumann VMS-80 cutting system and plated and pressed on 150-gram audiophile-quality vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and can be purchased here.

Additionally, Welch will be honored by UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of English & Comparative Literature with the Thomas Wolfe Prize this fall. The Thomas Wolfe Prize recognizes contemporary writers with a distinguished body of work and honors the memory of one of UNC’s most famous alumni, Thomas Clayton Wolfe. Welch will be the first musician to ever receive the award. A free, ticketed public program is scheduled for Tuesday, October 2, 2018, on the UNC campus. More information about the ticketed public event can be found here.

Gillian Welch is currently on tour and will perform in cities including Dallas, Kansas City, New Orleans and two dates in Saxapahaw, NC (full dates below). On this tour Gillian Welch and her musical partner, David Rawlings, will perform two full sets of music with no opener. Additionally, Gillian Welch will co-headline a Red Rocks Amphitheatre show with Punch Brothers on September 17th. Tickets for all dates are on sale now and can be purchased here.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have recorded 8 studio albums and have lent their talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. Recently, Welch & Rawlings released their latest collaboration, David Rawlings’s Poor Davids Almanack, a wry mixture of acoustic and electric music rich in ageless American vernacular. The album of ten new songs was engineered by studio wizards Ken Scott (Beatles, David Bowie) and Matt Andrews on analog tape during a week of sessions at legendary Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Read more about Poor Davids Almanack here. Additionally, in recognition of their remarkable career, Welch and Rawlings were honored with the Americana Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in 2015 and the Berklee American Masters Award in 2016.
