Unlike the band's past releases, Shadow By Your Side was written under a strict deadline: Boyer, along with bassist Jose Aybar and drummer Christopher Lauderdale, booked studio time before their new songs were written, in an effort not to waste time or overthink things. The result is nine tracks that he calls "half sarcastic and half sincere," featuring jangly guitar riffs, catchy pop melodies, and luminous harmonies.
