“scrappy and buzzy guitar rock, bolstered by Kempner's dexterous riffs … also offers some darker, nuanced shades that evoke the album's themes." - NPR
“A Dazed-Sounding Tribute To The Magic Of Queer Love” - The Fader
“Kempner hums [these] private pleasures over a gently looping acoustic guitar line that sounds like something from one of Broken Social Scene’s whispered love songs, luxuriating in her present bliss and overcoming past anxieties.” - Pitchfork
“Her songs tend to pack the punch of dark personal experience and observations while still sounding bubbly; they often go down like jello shots.” - New York Magazine’s “Vulture”
Prolific powerhouse Ellen Kempner aka Palehound released their critically acclaimed sophomore album, A Place I’ll Always Go, last year on Polyvinyl Record Co. The album graced many year-end lists including Rob Sheffield’sRolling Stone Top 20 Albums, Digital Trends 50 Best Albums and The Wild Honey Pie Top 100 Songs. Having ended 2017 with a US headlining tour (which saw shows with Big Thief, Jay Som, Mitski, M Ward, and more), and currently co-headlining a tour with Weaves (see dates here or below), the band has announced two additional dates with Courtney Barnett on 5/16 atUnion Transfer in Philadelphia, and on 5/19 at Music Hall of Williamsburgin Brooklyn.
Palehound recently released the video for A Place I’ll ALways Go album cut“Carnations”, which features Kempner leading a bad-ass girl group of incredibly talented performers. The video was also chosen to be a part of Boston Underground Film Festival’s music video program, which takes place in Harvard Square's historic Brattle Theatre from March 21-25, 2018 for its 20th edition. Since 1999, the Boston Underground Film Festival has been bringing exceptional feature films, shorts, animation, and music videos from all over the world to the Boston area each March. The festival celebrates unconventional stories, idiosyncratic voices, and homegrown talent by creating a space to highlight and support independent filmmakers.
Palehound also recently released their new YMCA Pool seven-inch on Saddle Creek. Kempner co-produced the release alongside Alicia Bognanno of Bully, who also engineered the tracks last summer in Nashville.
