Dive bar bartender by day, singer-songwriter by night, Timmy Skelly, Sandwich, Illinois’ finest LA transplant releases his debut EP Dive Bar Sermon, today via Live2 (Noah Floersch, Em Beihold, Pertinence). Timmy Skelly dives deeper into the spotlight and will celebrate his debut EP release live on October 30th at Los Angeles’ El Cid.
About the EP focus track “Soul on Fire”, he says: "It just feels right for Soul on Fire to kick off the EP. It’s a sort of chaotic stream of consciousness tune that came about very organically. I mean hell, we’re all just beautiful weeds on this great green rock aren’t we? Coming up between the cracks, around the turnips and ultimately returning to the soil of the big garden from which we came. I can’t believe in not believing but I can’t pretend to know much either. It’s that sort of dive bar philosophy I’ve come to embrace."
He describes his self-appointed genre "Midwest Y’allternative" as “a bit of everything I grew up on, including cornfields, lakefronts, my Dad’s red ‘79 Volkswagen bug playing Tom Petty and country radio, tall tales by the firepit, Friday night football, whispered prayers, frozen kisses and the smell of Halloween.”
On his debut EP, Timmy Skelly collaborated with James Flannigan (Matt Maeson, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kodaline, etc) and with Noah Ehler (d4vd, Laufey, Hailey Knox) to build upon his epic songwriting. Especially the collaboration on “Come on Diana” with Flannigan is gripping, manifesting his dream girl out on the open road over infectious Grouplove melodies and sun-soaked Midwest Americana guitars. Timmy says: "I’ve learned a lot while working in bars. I’ve learned even more while drinking in bars. This record is for all those lessons, those “sermons” from the good book of the neon church. Best enjoyed with a cold beverage or a long cool drive."
The cinematic opus music video for “Breckenridge Lane” is co-directed by Timmy Skelly and McClain Portis of the creative house Live2 in Timmy’s hometown. The video is both a purview into Timmy’s world and an homage to small-town life everywhere.
About the anthemic “Dear Depression,” he states: "Dear Depression is a love letter to sadness. It’s a nod to the strange comfort I find in darkness. It's a song about running to, and running away."
