(26th September) North-London future alternative icon Laurel Smith unveils new single "wolf" - following the release of standalone single "the red pill" earlier this year and her genre-defying 2023 debut EP 'TRASHSTARWRLD'.
A product of deep personal contemplation after a period of emotional upheaval, "wolf" finds Laurel reclaiming her sense of self through a maelstrom of celestial electronics and heart-pounding instrumentals.
A 'hip-hop kid' at heart, born into a family with rock and heavy metal at its core, those two disparate worlds can be heard within Laurel's potent, shapeshifting creations.
Taking inspiration from Swedish rap-pop experimentalist Bladee and his Drain Gang affiliates, as well as her 'hero' SOPHIE, elsewhere the otherworldly cinematic aesthetic of production house A24, the dark, grungy elements of Deftones and shadowy psychedelia of Yves Tumor are all present.
Rooted in escapism and ultimately centring on her own self-identification, "wolf" is a freeing experimentation in sound and ethos and a line in the sand for Laurel Smith.
Speaking more on the release of her new single - Laurel said:
"I think in a lot of situations we can give too much of ourselves to others and in doing so allow them complete control over us. Your thoughts and the choices you make no longer feel like your own, to the point where you completely lose your sense of self. 'wolf' is a song about freedom and independence, to have the space inside yourself to grow and not let anyone else take that up. Protect your flame at all costs, or you will find yourself at the mercy of the wolves in this world."
