July 5, 2024 (Chicago, IL) - Today, LA-via Melbourne Vietnamese producer pastels shares her new EP To: Miyazaki. The five-track EP is the Melbourne-based beatmaker’s second project with Nettwerk, following her 2023 LP Love Garden. She also announces her first ever live performance in the United States, scheduled for August 10 in East LA.
Known for a keen ability to evoke specific settings with her instrumentals, pastels takes listeners into the world of Studio Ghibli animator and legendary storyteller Hayao Miyazaki on To: Miyazaki. Jazzy and cinematic, the project blends isolated piano and violin, cinematic modern classical and boom-bap hip-hop for a moving and soothing listening experience.
“Miyazaki's films have been a constant source of inspiration for me,” shares pastels. “Each track in the project is a narrative woven with melodies and rhythms that echo the whimsical landscapes and profound themes such as nostalgia, melancholy and happiness present in Miyazaki's works. From the ethereal beauty of nature to the resilience of the human spirit, To: Miyazaki encapsulates my deep admiration for his storytelling prowess and his ability to evoke a sense of wonder. It's my musical journey through his timeless tales, hoping to capture even a fraction of the magic that Miyazaki has crafted.”
To celebrate the release of To: Miyazaki, and her new arrival in Los Angeles, pastels has organized her first ever show in the United States, with help from LA-via-PNW R&B artist Jessica Domingo, who some may know from her appearance on Drake, SZA & Sexyy Red’s “Rich Baby Daddy.” Entitled “Romantic Rhythms” this intimate event will take place August 10 at 5 PM PDT at Steep Los Angeles. Listeners will be treated to pastels’ mesmerizing beats, Domingo’s silky vocals and small plates and cocktails curated by Chef Wendy Zeng in a lush garden setting. More details available HERE.
“Romantic Rhythms” will mark pastels and Domingo’s first performance together in person, and the two plan to tease a new collaborative song at the show. The bubbling artists’ first collab track Could’ve Been U caught fire last year, receiving several Spotify editorial playlist adds and earning Sleeper Pick of the Week honors from the Joe Budden Podcast.
