(July 9th, 2024) - Body Meat - the musical project of Chris Taylor - shares new single “Electrische,” from his debut album Starchris, due August 23rd via Partisan Records. Written at 2 a.m. in Taylor’s home, “Electrische” was unlocked through an exercise in free writing and limiting overthinking, which Taylor describes as “like driving a fast car through the hills of Switzerland at night [where] you can see the lights of a club faintly off in the distance." The single’s opening drums capture that vibe of a hazy nightclub left behind, and halfway through, the ethereal synths take over, recreating the magical feeling at the end of an unrestrained night out. Alongside the single is an accompanying video directed by Parker Corey (Injury Reserve / ByStorm) featuring long, single-take shots that follow Taylor and create a morphing effect.
Taylor’s debut album blends chaos, complexity, and pop appeal, drawing inspiration from the intricate world-building and storytelling found in role-playing video games. Across 13 tracks, Starchris sketches his protagonist navigating a series of internal struggles, exploring the self-doubt, memory, trauma, and indecision that’s inevitably part of a hero’s journey, which he previewed in his prior singles “North Side,” “High Beams,” and “Focus.” To preview the album prior to its release on August 23rd, Body Meat is announcing a special live set in New York at Purgatory on August 7th, with support from DJ Haram and YHWH Nailgun. Tickets are available now HERE.
In its totality, Starchris evokes both the exhilaration and the emotional challenges that are part of any long, transformative journey. This is music in frantic motion, reaching for imaginative new ideas and striving toward a place that feels even more surprising and refreshing—searching for utopia. Suitably, the album cover features four clones of Taylor in a car, each in active poses suggestive of various stages of joy and despair.
Since creating the moniker in 2016, Taylor's releases as Body Meat have functioned like distinct musical sandboxes with different dimensions and house rules established for each one. Taking inspiration from early stints in Denver art-rock bands, Taylor’s music as Body Meat is rooted in piecing together the debris in the aftermath of unpredictable genre clashes and making sense of them. His singular blend of trap production and Ethiopian / funk music on his two previously released EPs, Truck Music (2019) and Year of the Orc (2021), existed in a plane all of their own, with Pitchfork describing the latter as “chaotic, overwhelming stuff, which is part of the point.”
