Statement from the artist:
Last year in July, as a birthday present to my mother, who was then in the thick of a brutal divorce, I chose to cover one of her favorite songs by Sinead O’Connor, “TROY”, a song about Sinead’s relationship with her own mother that many have interpreted as the ultimate break up song. Heartbreakingly, the day before we had planned to record our cover, we heard the news that Sinead had passed away. This eerie coincidence made the decision to pay tribute to Sinead and her music song even more salient. As I recorded the vocal, a sudden and violent thunderstorm broke out through the countryside around the studio. Heavy sheets of rain pounded the old stone slats of the studio roof. And the moment I spat out those final words, ‘you should have left the light on,’ the storm cleared and the countryside was again bathed in summer sunshine. It was very bizarre and quite magical! Sinead O’Connor was a warrior, a woman who transmuted her trauma into art, who brilliantly alchemized her sorrow into song. A woman who stood up for justice and paid a real price for it. She shed a blinding light on the spiritual manipulation and sexual abuse inside the Irish Catholic church. She was brave and ultimately was condemned, demonized and destroyed by the media and the public at large for illuminating this truth. Sinead O’Connor held her heart like a torch and in her rage, her passion and her tenderness lit the way for so many female artists across this world. This song represents so much to my mother and to myself, as well as so many others who know what it is like to die in the arms of love and rise again from the ashes of a destructive relationship, to find in the afterlife of love the heart does resurrect itself and from pain comes power and wisdom. May God rest her soul and protect her in her next journey.
With gratitude and love,
