Composer, performer, and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Academy Award & GRAMMY-nominated composer, producer, and singer Emile Mosseri have announced the sequel release to complete their new album I Could be Your Dog / I Could be Your Moon, out May 27th on Ghostly International. The prequel and sequel together form a fully realized body of work intertwining the duo's expansive auditory and thematic explorations.
The announcement is paired with the release of new single “Green To You,” an atmospheric depiction of a dream or a need for renewal - to be new in the eyes of another, experiencing the excitement of seeing and being seen as imagined, idealized versions of ourselves. This new track unveils the duo’s newly fused voice as they sing “I only want to be green to you” over an organ phrase swirling underneath. Directed by Chantal Anderson ( “Moon In Your Eye”, “Log In Your Fire”), the accompanying visual fits into and builds on the canon of previous works between the three collaborators. The subject here, a woman walking through an ordinary daily moment, is pulled into a freeform descent ultimately meeting her match. Anderson’s slow and cinematic visuals bring an added dimension to Smith and Mosseri’s celestial soundtrack.
Smith’s work as a producer and composer has pushed the boundaries of experimental music and amassed critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR Music, The New York Times and more. Mosseri has collaborated with artists such as Angel Olsen, Haxan Cloak and scored multiple award-winning and notable films, most recently Minari, Kajillionaire and The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Smith and Mosseri realized they were neighbors in Los Angeles and met up for a few hikes before the pandemic began to separate the world. Both had been mutual admirers of each other's work, however, it was not until Smith had moved away that a collaboration between the two artists began to materialize. Despite the physical distance between Smith and Mosseri, their virtual connection sparked a friendship and musical exchange over email, the exercise becoming the framework for their eventual first song together, “Log In Your Fire”. From there, the pair composed a series of musical foundations, trading files from afar throughout 2020. While the origins of the project were formed from a distance, the prequel finds the two artists coming together in real time in Los Angeles and completing the cycle.
About their process, Mosseri notes, “That's one of the things that was so special about this collaboration, it felt like we were writing music through one another.” The resulting body of work is completely unique from anything the two have done before.
Smith states, “In our collaboration we talked about the idea of needing a catalyst, or inspiration coming from a reaction to something, Like when you think you hear a friend say something, and they said something else, but what you thought you heard was actually something that you wrote, that you generated, and had a clear channel to grab it because your sense of self didn't get in the way.” |
