"Fist-pumping, Quadrophenia-esque" - Gothamist
"'Never Mind the List' leads with very windmillable guitar chords, and features a spiraling melody that doesn't quite follow traditional verse-chorus-verse structure but is nonetheless catchy as hell." - Brooklyn Vegan
“'Excited Ones' boasts big power-pop energy with its stomping drums and guitars that crunch with just a bit of jangle." - Rolling Stone
"Yet another supercatchy powerpop number from Robert Pollard's endless bank of these, that once again tips its hat towards The Who" - Brooklyn Vegan
2021 PRESS
"Earth Man Blues squarely hits all the marks that make Guided By Voices great — again and again and again.Could be the GBV’s best album since 1995’s Alien Lanes." **** 4 stars - Rolling Stone
“Earth Man Blues is all killer" ***** 5 stars - Shindig Magazine
"'Sunshine Girl Hello' has a glowing ’60s guitar lick that animates its darkly intimate lyrics about unrequited love, while album closer 'Child’s Play' elevates the simplicity of its doubled guitar noodling with a buzzing harmony that mirrors the boundless energy of its lyrics." - Pitchfork
"Bob remains an earworm factory that operates 24/7 and 2021 has been a banner year for GBV" - Brooklyn Vegan "Pairing the band’s brief, light-grunge songwriting with a quick succession of moving footage and still images of their live show with barely decipherable imagery of ’50s television shows, Sunday morning cartoons, Hindu deity, The Great Train Robbery, American military propaganda, and much more provides the sensation of quickly flipping channels." - FLOOD
"They are as essential and as American as Grateful Dead, The Band and REM." - Joyzine
“‘My (Limited) Engagement’ is hook-laden heavy guitar pop/rock with a soaring vocal melody from Bob, anchored by solid and slightly atypical timing.” - Rolling Stone
“Seriously irresistible.. this is maximum Rock n Roll.” **** 4 stars - Shindig Magazine
"The 15 songs embark another tear through the band’s explosive rock that fuels a fervently emotive wave of suspense, chugging noise, and punk-tinged soul. Yes, this group of bad-asses can still out-record and out-write anybody….anywhere." - Glide
"The first single from the album is yet another winner in Robert Pollard's deep well of riffs and hooks, with a killer chorus and soaring guitar solo, all in a tight two minute package." - Brooklyn Vegan
"'Trust Them Now’ feels very redolent of the start of spring and features gorgeous, chiming guitars and melodic vocals. The producer handles both the backing and Robert Pollard’s lead vocals equally adeptly in terms of highlighting their vividness, while the guitars recall Dinosaur Jr. and Hüsker Dü at their best." - Backseat Mafia
"It’s one of GBV’s most eclectic, adventurous records to date, careening between heavy-rockers reminiscent of Black Sabbath, guitar lines cribbed from early 2000s pop-punk, near-rock operas worthy of the Who, and sweet little swingers that sound like the Monkees melting in the sun." - Rolling Stone
"'Trust Them Now' is a fantastic pop basher with a strong punk edge to it a la Buzzcocks. It goes down smooth, though, thanks to Pollard way with a melody and his velvety voice." - Brooklyn Vegan |

Guided By Voices have always played by their own rules and they’ve kept extraordinarily busy during the pandemic. Three albums in 2020 and two albums in 2021 garnered amazing press, and they’re now selling out shows everywhere. But the new album Crystal Nuns Cathedral tops them all! The mighty Guided by Voices are set to unleash upon the world their 35th and quite possibly…BEST album, Crystal Nuns Cathedral, on March 4, 2022. How do they do it you might ask? Well, we don’t know how they do it, but we certainly do know WHY they do it. They do it because quite honestly we NEED them to do it. The world needs The Rock, and we need loud guitars, we need anthemic songs, we need a reason to raise a rock fist in the air and give a “Hell Yeah!" On Crystal Nuns Cathedral, the band delivers all of this and so much more. Just four months since It’s Not Them. It Couldn’t Be Them. It Is Them!, comes Crystal Nuns Cathedral, twelve songs determined to challenge for the title of greatest Guided by Voices album of all-time. Hyperbole you say? Not this time. The guitars are bigger, the arrangements are more ambitious, the songs are uplifting, epic, and as incredibly hook laden as always!
Pure power pop perfection like lead single "Excited Ones" mix perfectly with the slow burning "Climbing a Ramp" which reaches its climax on a stunning guitar lead before dissolving into the fist pumping anthem "Never Mind the List," which serves as the beating heart of the entire album. Do you still need convincing? Listen to the one-two punch of "Forced to Sea" and "Huddled" and marvel at the epic scope and vision of an incredible band on full display. This record is a statement, a challenge, a monument, a call to arms. Top this one if you can, this is the new benchmark. Who will best it? Who will try? Listen to Crystal Nuns Cathedral, and report back to us. We will be eagerly waiting. |
