Last week, Alex Henry Foster released his second album of the year, A Measure Of Shape And Sounds. The album is an intimate journey of its own, representing a profound personal breathe-in made of several layers of guitar loops, reverberations, resonances, and oscillations juxtaposed together to create a sonic multi-directional contemplative maelstrom.

"It felt like the representation of an organic movement that could ultimately break us free from the echo chamber we might have been trapped in and therefore end the emotional twirl and affective cycle of redundancy that too often comes with the vivid sensation of emptiness and desperation," Foster remarks.

The album provides an ongoing soundtrack to that internal self-searching reflection, inviting us to lift ourselves forward, to tame the other bonding voices to which we usually surrender our longing desires for freedom.

Alongside the release of the album, Foster is highlighting the song "Cinematic Insight." He says, "The song gravitates around the conceptual notion of intimate and reflective meditations. It evokes a certain form of musing sobriety, if not a contemplative composure, towards the perception we have of ourselves as opposed to what we need to believe we have become with time passing by."

"Cinematic Insight" is shared alongside a video, featuring serene shots of nature and of smoke. "The song’s visual is centered on the highly symbolic nature of smoke as an essential component associated with spirituality, regardless of religious concepts, cultural philosophies, or societal values. It’s a universal element to whatever ancient or modern rituals there are." The choice to include imagery of different elements in nature, of people and of the symbolic smoke creates a collage of sorts, evoking the idea of impermanence. "From birth to life, death, and renaissance and whatever might define what lies in between for every individual. It’s a passage through time and its corresponding essence."

A Measure Of Shape And Sounds is part of an extensive body of work in which the recently-released album Kimiyo is a center component, along with the upcoming movie Voyage à la Mer, set to be released in 2025.

A Measure of Shape and Sounds is out now via Hopeful Tragedy Records.

ALEX HENRY FOSTER BIO

Alex Henry Foster is a Canadian musician, author, producer, and composer, formerly the frontman for Juno Awards nominee Your Favorite Enemies. Alex Henry Foster released his first solo album Windows in the Sky in 2018. The album is a “dreamy blast of post-rock” (NME) that “brings to mind artists like Hammock and Asche & Spencer with heaping helpings of Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky”. His second album consists of a live reinterpretation of his solo material, recorded at a sold-out performance at the 40th Festival de Jazz de Montreal. Ben Lemelin is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and music producer. He and Foster have partnered on many projects together. Lemelin is part of The Long Shadows, Foster’s band, and was bass player in Your Favorite Enemies. Momoka, a Japanese artist from Tokyo, established herself in Montreal 10 years ago and has been a consistent collaborator with AHF, and is also an artist in her own right. She has a solo record set to be released in early 2025.
