Lead single “Patterns” earned acclaim spanning Pitchfork, Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, Consequence, Under The Radar, NME and Clash. Today they have unveiled new single “Ancient Love,” an enchanting celestial opus. The band shares, “What we are today comes from our thoughts and perceptions of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life for tomorrow. Our life is the creation of our mind which originates from ancient love.” Watch / Share: “Ancient Love” visualizer Recently hailed by Pitchfork with a 9.3 for their 1991 classic Yerself Is Steam, Mercury Rev has been revered for their experimental artistry and challenging the status quo throughout their career. The new collection is a glistening psych-jazz-folk-baroque-ambient quest highlighting the band’s sophisticated instrumentation, met with heroic indie rock chops and offering a fresh new poetic perspective. Born Horses is vocally inspired by the spirits of art minimalist Tony Conrad (LaMonte Young’s Dream Syndicate w/ John Cale and a close friend to The Velvet Underground) and beat poet Robert Creeley (one of the most influential American poets of the 20th century and an associate of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and the Black Mountain poets), acolytes of progressive thought and action who both taught at the University at Buffalo, the city where the band was formed. The album title, named after the majestically rippling sixth track “Born Horses”, was chosen because its words resonate through the entire record, encompassing the idea of flight (“I dreamed we were born horses waiting for wings”) and the phrase “You and I” that appears at different junctures on the album. Ltd. To introduce the sound of the new album, HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster share the single “Young Man,” which is a song speaking to the anxieties of the future weaved with an optimistic melody. On the song, each of the ten members of the Asian supergroup blend together seamlessly. Paired with the new song is the Pennacky-directed video which features each member of both HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster along with each bands’ frequent collaborator and producer JNKYRD. A casual chat in 2020 seemingly foretold the collaboration between HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster. The conversation led to musical collaborations including Sunset Rollercoaster’s remake version of the HYUKOH track “Help” from their album through love and HYUKOH vocalist OHHYUK’s feature on the Sunset Rollercoaster track “Candlelight” from their album Soft Storm. When Sunset Rollercoaster visited Seoul for a headline show in March 2023, the audience spotted HYUKOH members at the show, which took the anticipation of a collaboration of the two bands to another level. After they discovered their chemistry in the studio, the two bands decided to create a full-length project together, the result being AAA. The eight tracks of AAA were recorded over the course of a year during monthly meetings in various studios across South Korea including in the lush Gapyeong, buzzing Seoul and tranquil Jeju Island. HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster considered themselves to be a “troupe of music wanderers'' as they traversed South Korea together for inspiration and connection. With their collected experiences, they would return to the studio to jam together where those improvisations and demo ideas from various of the bands’ members would morph into full songs.  During an interview with the Substack Tune Glue in 2020, Sunset Rollercoaster’s Kuo said “Music is about the relationship or connection between human beings, because music is definitely a language. It’s kind of a lower language—you don’t need to understand cultural stuff for music to touch people’s hearts.” Although their paths of life and native languages are different, AAA is the musical dialogue between HYUKOH and Sunset Rollercoaster that caresses the tight bond built through numerous musical works and jam sessions together. Shane, Keveen and myself wrote this song together, from scratch, one late summer night in the studio. It started with the grooving bassline followed by the drum beat and guitar hook. Keveen and I harmonize on the Turn Away lyric, as well as trade the lead vocals on various verses. We brought the song to producer Rob Schnapf, who has worked on some of our favorite albums, including the majority of Elliott Smith's discography, Beck's Mellow Gold, and AA Bondys Believers. Rob suggested we slow down the track a bit from its original tempo and that helped to solidify the groove, while still being upbeat it made the song feel more relaxed and cruising. For the music video we worked with our frequent collaborator, Matt Lingo. We filmed all over Southern California, including Encinitas at Swami's the legendary surf beach, San Diego at Balboa Park, many locations in Death Valley and Highland Park in Los Angeles. I was able to drive a 1966 Chrysler Newport in the video and cruise around Encinitas. Laurence Pike returns with his most ambitious album project to date - The Undreamt-of Centre is an evocative, contemporary reimagining of the requiem mass. The album draws on the sounds of modern classical music, Japanese environmental ambient music, fourth world electronics, free jazz and the choral traditions of Estonia, with particular influence from Tallinn-based composer Tonu Korvits. Featuring the VOX Sydney Philharmonia Choir, conducted by Pike’s childhood friend, composer Sam Lipman, the album was recorded in a 19th century Gothic church in Sydney. Pike is launching the project with two performances at the Phoenix Central Park cultural centre in Sydney with the VOX Sydney Philharmonia Choir on Thursday 22nd August. Laurence Pike on The Undreamt-of Centre: I first had the thought of working with voices a number of years ago. I had the strange notion of making a requiem mass for drums, electronics and choir. It sat with me since then, until it felt the time was right to realise the idea. Why a requiem? Initially I simply liked the idea of a structural format that had existed and been reimagined again and again over hundreds of years. Ultimately, it’s a ritual set to music. The processes and ecstatic outcomes of rituals, were something I had explored in making the Holy Spring album in 2019. I became interested in subverting the religious musical construct of a requiem into something far more contemporary, using language and sounds not readily associated with it. Directed by Wyatt Spain Winfrey, the video for ‘Tough' is a mesmerizing fusion that allows both superstars to fearlessly explore each other's musical realms, showcasing their indomitable spirit. Set in a rural backdrop, Quavo and Lana are intrepid companions, undaunted by life's trials. On one end, Quavo brandishes his shotgun while Lana carries her guitar, symbolizing their unwavering strength despite their contrasting origins.  Watch the video for “Tough” HERE.
