July 31, 2024—Acclaimed duo Magdalena Bay debuts a new track today, “Tunnel Vision”—listen HERE. The new song—written, composed and produced by the band—is the latest offering from Imaginal Disk, their sophomore album out August 23 via Mom+Pop Music—pre-save/pre-order it HERE.
Of the song, Magdalena Bay declare: “artificial intelligence won't approximate humanity until it learns how to hate itself”
“Tunnel Vision” follows previous album offerings “Image,” which Rolling Stone praised as a “ a spaced-out dancefloor delight,” and “Death & Romance,” which Vulture praised as “kaleidoscopic,” while PAPER commended the duo for another “glassy, sprawling prog-pop odyssey that builds from a tightly wound jam into something seemingly designed to hit the back walls of stadiums.”
Both “Image” and “Death & Romance” provided a glimpse into the universe Magdalena Bay has created to accompany this album, which follows the story of True—played by the band’s Mica Tenenbaum—as she learns what it means to be human after receiving a consciousness upgrade in the form of an “imaginal disk” inserted into her forehead.
Additionally, the band will hit the road for The Imaginal Mystery Tour this fall, an extensive run of North American headline shows with stops in New YorkLos AngelesChicago and more—see full tour routing below and get tickets HERE.
Aside from last year’s EP, mini mix vol. 3Imaginal Disk marks Magdalena’s Bay first full-length project since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Mercurial World, in 2021. Vulture praised the album as “one of 2021’s best pop statements,” while Pitchfork celebrated the duo’s “magic power” of sounding “like whatever you grew up with, whenever that was,” and PopMatters commended the album for “providing a blueprint for a new generation of electronic pop.”
Magdalena Bay is the Los Angeles by way of Miami duo consisting of Mica Tenenbaum (vocals, producer, songwriter) and Matthew Lewin (producer, songwriter). The two first met at an after-school music program in Miami where they grew up, bonding over shared musical influences and eventually starting a prog rock band Tabula Rasa. That band broke up, but when Tenenbaum and Lewin crossed paths again in college, they reconnected with the goal of making something closer to pop music that blends retro and futuristic elements under the moniker Magdalena Bay. They released a series of EPs leading up to their critically acclaimed debut album Mercurial World in 2021 and went on to sell out their first headlining tour, play numerous festivals around the world— including Coachella in 2023, tour with Charli XCXCaroline PolachekFlume and collaborate with Lil YachtyJIHYOBlu DeTiger and more.

Mediocre, the Los Angeles-based rock duo of guitarist/vocalist Piper Torrison (she/they) and bassist/vocalist Keely Martin (she/her), offer scorching indie rock meditations with their hotly anticipated debut album Growth Eater, due out September 27 on Dangerbird Records. Seeking comfort in an increasingly uncomfortable world, the irresistibly catchy collection commands listeners to the dancefloor as they infuse ideas of broad existentialism, dystopia and restlessness into commentary on how that angst spills over into daily life.

Arriving alongside an official video, lead single “Fun Time Fix (We Go Go)” beckons in a little escapism while inviting listeners to dance all your troubles away. The band shares, “Sometimes everyone needs a light-hearted time with friends, where you put whatever is causing you pain aside and let go. In the context of the album, which comments on the discomfort of growth, Fun Time Fix highlights the joy and beauty that exists in the midst of all the growing pains. We were inspired by early 2000’s dance pop that acted as soundtracks of our early adolescent years, and wanted to hone in on that nostalgia and what role it plays for blissful distraction during these current times in our adult lives.”

After writing songs during their overlapping one-year stint in Boston—inspired by the cerebral pop arrangements of Tegan and Sara’s The Con, the clean, poignant vocals of Jenny Lewis, and the yearning, hopeful indie rock of Broken Social Scene—Mediocre joined drummer Jake Pavlica and producer Danny Nogueiras (Together Pangea, No Win) in his Glassell Park studio with the goal of playful experimentation and with more confidence than ever. They emerged with a searingly thick power pop record that darts seamlessly between ‘00s dance-punk grooves, brazen pop-ballads and blistering guitar lines.

The album title Growth Eater, can be understood from numerous lenses, such as the harmful ways we eat away at ourselves, and by extension, the opportunity for positive growth when one finds the strength to sever bad habits that feast on our well-being. Forming Mediocre as high school sophomores best friends Piper Torrison and Keely Martin have faced huge life changes together. With timeless pop hooks, a mutual love and respect for each other and the world they have built, Growth Eater provides solace and solid ground to stay planted as the world finds new rugs to pull out from underneath you.

2. Litterbug!

PRAISE FOR MOONDADDY

"'Poet Lies'... looks set to be a dizzying, mellifluous debut opus, led by the entrancing “Lover’s Eye”"
Wonderland

"“Silver Dust” acts as another taste of Potiker’s dreamy alchemy, crafting a track that is equally a gently swaying guitar ballad and a floating dream pop reverie."
Under The Radar

"Her music captures a larger-than-life sound through her use of strings, one that is almost cinematic; and, with the help of Texas-based producer Manuel Calderon (aka El Cosmophonico), she has been able to create her own unique soundscape that is distinctly moondaddy."
The Line of Best Fit

What started out as escapism from existential angst has morphed into artistic assuredness for San Diego, California-based dream pop band moondaddy. In just a few years, the buzzed-about quintet’s singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Cara Potiker has gone from hazily sketching out tunes in her bedroom to tripping out audiences and turning heads with moondaddy’s mesmerizing live show.

2023 saw the release of their critically acclaimed debut, Poet Lies, and today moondaddy shares news of their newest EP, Lightwave Lightwave. The four-song collection sees the band take its fearless and transcendent live show into the studio for a bold, completely analog recording experience. From tracking live to cutting vinyl, the entire process involved no computers.

“This is the first project that sounds exactly the way I want my music to sound. I didn’t have the confidence before, and I just let men take reins,” Cara says.“My vision really came to life on this analog EP—my band and I took full advantage of the spontaneous and manic energy of tape recording.”

Alongside the news of Lightwave Lightwave, moondaddy shares its darkly alluring first single, “Water Bearer,” a stunning homage to Cara's relationship with her partner. Her lyrics are poetic, full of gorgeous longing that is underscored by a wistful synth. The dreamy track features Cara’s richly expressive low-register vocals blanketed by waves of ethereal textures, glistening electric guitars, and spare and precise drumming. Towards the song’s end is a stunning operatic passage performed by vocalist-keyboardist, Julia Rahm, Cara’s partner.

"“Water Bearer” is an homage to the depth and strength of my relationship with my partner and bandmate. The six of us (Manny, Pat, Rob, Gabe, Julia, and I) collectively set an intention to make the song sound familiar yet supernatural. I think we were able to capture something kind of otherworldly during our breakdowns."

moondaddy - "Water Bearer"
moondaddy’s latest, Lightwave Lightwave, is due out September 13th, 2024 on vinyl and available via all streaming platforms. The four-song collection achieves that rare feat of sounding otherworldly, vintage, and current all at the same time. Lightwave Lightwave was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas and co-produced by Manuel Calderon (Animal Collective, Portugal. The Man, Beach House) and mastered/cut from the tapes to a lacquer by Paul Gold (Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, and LCD Soundsystem) at Salt Mastering.

moondaddy is both emotionally evocative and lyrically abstract. Cara curates sparkling and dusky soundscapes replete with meticulously-crafted instrumental tones. Songs patiently unfold with immersive and imaginative arrangements. Cara’s richly expressive vocals inhabit the songs in diverse ways, haunting the music with low-toned singing while other times soaring above with phoenix-like majesty. Her lyrics are enigmatic, viscerally emotional, and poetic—defining feelings clearly without belaboring linear narratives. The band’s artfully impressionistic aesthetic comes to life onstage with its live show which features a stunning installation of projected visuals created by NYC-based artist Blair Neal.

Lightwave Lightwave finds Cara reuniting with Manual at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas with her band for all-analog recording sessions. The lineup for the EP includes Julia Rahm, synthesizer and harmony vocals; Patrick Heaney, drums; Rob Wren, bass; and Gabe Poissant, guitar. The band tracked live in the studio directly to tape. “I loved recording this way because there is an immediate finality to the process. Tape is limited so you can’t endlessly tinker,” Cara says.

"Water Bearer" is out today via all DSPs. Lightwave Lightwave EP is due out Septemeber 13th.
moondaddy has a few shows lined up later this summer, including a Lightwave Lightwave listening party at Part Time Lover in San Diego on July 28th. Find more information HERE.

What people are saying about The Bug Club:
“‘Quality Pints’ is a wild two-minute rager that reminds me of the Buzzcocks and the Vaselines. It’s all about something the band has surely experienced during all that touring: the search for a decent beer in various cities around the world. In addition to the explosive punk-rock energy, the song has a hip-shaking rock ‘n’ roll element, manifested in a rattling tambourine and occasional outbursts of electric-shock lead guitar” - STEREOGUM

“…the kind of indie punk ripper that feels custom built to send audiences into a shout-along, beer-fueled frenzy.” [“Quality Pints”] BROOKLYN VEGAN

“The amped-up punk track is a blast of shout-along energy, and vicious guitar solos following the pair’s journey to secure a solid pint of beer… It’s as ridiculous as it is fun, and Harris and Willmett are bringing their particular flavor of absurdity to Sub Pop’s legendary roster. Cheers, indeed.”  [“Quality Pints”]  “Best New Songs” - PASTE

Bryan Ferry announces Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023. The 81-track collection is the first-ever career-spanning release to fully explore and celebrate the depth of Bryan Ferry’s work as a solo artist, spanning a period of over 50 years of music and 16 solo albums. The collection is due for release on 25th October 2024 via BMG.

The 81 tracks that make up Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 illustrate an adventure in music like no other. A peerless story in songwriting that has been unfolding for more than 50 years will now be celebrated in this kaleidoscopic compendium of Bryan Ferry’s music. The release is a celebration of the performer who has carved out a place as a master modern interpreter of song via a dizzyingly inventive series of cover versions that range from Bob Dylan to Amy Winehouse, Rodgers and Hart to the Velvet Underground via Tim Buckley, Shakespeare, sea shanties and Sam and Dave. Then there’s the songwriter who, in singles like 1985’s ‘Slave To Love,’ has crafted music that stands amongst the defining recordings of their era, yet sound unique and timeless to this day. There’s the futurist conjuring vortices of electronica; or the passionate revivalist, presenting songs and styles from the 1920s and 1930s as if they were the hot sound of tomorrow calling. There’s the figure out on the pulsing nightclub dancefloor, tripping the light fantastic; and the guy who wants only to be alone, slipping away into brooding, bittersweet backstreets where everything turns neon and noir.

Marking the start of this career-spanning celebration, Bryan Ferry has released ‘She Belongs To Me’. A powerful re-imagining of the 1965 Bob Dylan classic that brings the story full circle. Listen HERE.

Five decades ago, the Roxy Music phenomenon exploded in a technicolour flash of pop, high art, outré fashion and glamour, asserting band leader Bryan Ferry as one of the most vital and exciting songwriters British music has ever seen. During this ultra-prolific period, in 1973, Ferry launched his solo career in parallel to Roxy Music. His first release, an audacious remodelling of Bob Dylan’s apocalyptic 1962 anthem ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,’ signalled the dawn of Ferry’s status as one of the great modern interpreters of song, in tandem with his own peerless songwriting and composition. Fast forward to 2024 and Bryan Ferry returns to the Dylan songbook anew. ‘She Belongs To Me’ is rendered in a beautifully rough-edged style balancing shades of the Velvet Underground against the most prominent Ferry whistling solo since Roxy Music’s 1981 rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy.’

‘She Belongs To Me’ is part of a new five-track EP titled Retrospective: She Belongs To Me - the first of three digital EP releases that will accompany Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 over the coming months. Listen to the EP HERE.

Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 brings together, for the first time, Bryan Ferry’s classic recorded output with Island Records, Polydor, Virgin, E.G. Records and BMG, and features two brand new recordings. The album will be released in multiple formats including a 5CD deluxe box set featuring 81 songs, accompanied by a 100-page hardback book containing extensive new liner notes, rare and unseen photographs and imagery. A 2LP gatefold edition presents The Best Of Bryan Ferry, containing 20 songs pressed to black vinyl with variants including a green/blue vinyl pressing and a clear vinyl pressing. A 1CD version will also feature the same 20 songs and a booklet containing liner notes and photographs. An 81-track edition of the album will be released digitally, including a brand-new song titled ‘Star.’ Bryan Ferry’s first new music release in over a decade.

The 5CD deluxe box set is curated across five stages, with each disc devoted to a different aspect of Bryan Ferry’s career. ‘Disc One: The Best Of Bryan Ferry’ presents 20 essential tracks. World-devouring singles like ‘Slave To Love’, ‘The 'In' Crowd’ and ‘Let's Stick Together’ - songs that are woven into the fabric of British music and remain abidingly popular.

‘Disc TwoCompositions’ examines the 1977-2014 period, and how Ferry’s craft has evolved. The unfolding narrative of ‘Can’t Let Go’ and the deep mood of ‘The Only Face’, like many of Ferry’s songs, both share a sense of being out in the world, endlessly roaming main drags and backstreets. Elsewhere the sashay of ‘Limbo’ and ‘Loop De Li’ spotlight elements of Ferry’s work that remain unchanged - always keeping one eye on the dancefloor. His great constant theme, however, is love and its costs, viewed from different angles. Three of his finest recordings on the subject feature here in ‘When She Walks In The Room’, ‘I Thought’ and ‘Reason Or Rhyme’, each equally beguiling and deeply resonant.

Disc Three: Interpretations’ celebrates the remodelling side to Ferry’s artistry. His remakes of the Velvet Underground’s ‘What Goes On,’ Sam and Dave’s ‘Hold On, I’m Coming’ and Otis Redding’s ‘That’s How Strong My Love Is’ see Ferry exploring the past as if it were now, roaming genres and presciently sending up a signal for the post-punk generation to receive years later - that the music remains all up for grabs.

‘Disc Four: The Bryan Ferry Orchestra’ explores the conceptual project that Ferry began with 2012’s The Jazz Age album, reimagining music from across his own repertoire as if it had been recorded nine decades earlier by one of the great early jazz combos. Ferry doesn’t sing on The Jazz Age, but reappears in a new light. With his voice and lyrics removed the listener’s attention is focussed onto his gift as a composer. Ferry refined this concept across two further collections, 2018’s Bitter-Sweet and 2013’s The Great Gatsby: The Jazz Recordings - featuring reworkings of Roxy Music’s ‘Love Is The Drug’ and Amy Winehouse’s modern classic ‘Back To Black’ for the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 cinematic release, The Great Gatsby.

‘Disc Five: Rare and Unreleased’ gathers B-sides, extras, curiosities and outtakes. A shimmering remake of Roxy Music’s ‘Mother Of Pearl’ recorded in the early-1990s during the Horoscope / Mamouna sessions features backing vocals from the great Ronnie Spector. ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ is bolstered by Elvis’s original rockabilly bandmates Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana, recorded for 2001’s Sun Records tribute album, Good Rockin’ Tonight. Elsewhere Ferry’s celebratory take on ‘Whatever Gets You Thru The Night,’ John Lennon’s ramshackle secular hymn of 1974, was begun in 1995 for a Lennon tribute planned by Yoko Ono that was never released. Ferry re-worked the track in 2010 as a bonus addition for the Olympia album.

Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 celebrates Bryan Ferry’s revered songwriting talent. The tracklisting explores the sonic versatility and genre fluidity of his solo career – from rock ‘n’ roll to R&B dance-based grooves, piano ballads, electronica, ambient music, jazz, country, folk, blues, avant-garde and new wave. At the centre of it all is the unmistakable musicality and style of Bryan Ferry.
