PHANTOGRAM RETURN WITH “ALL A MYSTERY” HERE

ON TOUR WITH KINGS OF LEON THIS SUMMER + FALL
(tour dates below)

Today, critically-acclaimed alt duo Phantogram unveil the first single of their next chapter, “All A Mystery.” Weaving together a hazy mix of synths, hypnotic guitars and beat-crushing drum machines, with mesmerizing vocals into a psychedelic sea of light, Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter’s return is a triumph. Co-produced by GRAMMY-award winning producer John Hill (Portugal. The Man, Bleachers, Cage The Elephant, et al.), it’s a sensational return to form for the NY duo.

“All A Mystery” kicks off a powerful summer for the Phantogram as they set out on a 27-date North American tour with fellow alternative heavyweights Kings of Leon across August, September and October. More tour dates will be announced soon.

The single also launches Phantogram’s new partnership with Neon Gold Records, the celebrated indie label known for its long lineage of powerful alt pop voices from Charli XCX and HAIM to Tove Lo, MARINA and Christine and the Queens.

Phantogram adds:““All A Mystery” was a line that we used to sing when we first started writing songs for Phantogram. We would sing it and harmonize it together while working in the barn turned recording studio. Back then, it was “all a mystery” to us how we came together to become a band, and 14 years later, we are bewildered that we have been doing this for so long. This song touches on love, life, death and loss. It digs into memories, and the wonder of existence. And it examines the push and pull of time on this planet, and being able to share the experience of everything all at once as a mere grain of sand on an endless beach.”

About Phantogram:
Lauded as an experimental and alternative band and one that’s never been married to a particular genre, Phantogram – comprised of lifelong friends Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel – have continued to change the zeitgeist for almost a decade by consistently challenging it with their signature blend of hard-hitting beats, guitar driven dark psychedelia and electronic pop. Since the arrival of 2010’s debut release, Eyelid Movies, the duo has amassed over a billion streams, achieved one platinum-certified single, two gold-certified singles, collaborated with legends such as Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Billy Corgan, The Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus, partnered with Big Boi of Outkast to form supergroup Big Grams, headlined sold out shows worldwide, become a festival staple and toured with artists including Arcade Fire, The xx, Muse, M83, alt-J and more.

(May 31st, 2024) - Superfan, the alias of Kali Flanagan, shares his new single and music video “When You Come To LA.” The fifth single before the release of his new album Tow Truck Jesus due June 28th via Nettwerk“When You Come To LA” was the first song written for the album and acts as a map of the knots in Superfan’s relationship with the world and himself through the context of the assumption that others see the narrator embodied solely by his perceived flaws. Flanagan’s reference to the Magnetic Fields on the track, “I can’t stop listening to I Don’t Wanna Get Over You”, reveals their influence on Flanagan’s flippant and sardonic use of blunt admittance. After listening to the album in full, the opener can also be thought of as foreshadowing Flanagan’s transition, the end of relationships and his move to New York City.

Throughout the album, Superfan’s personal reflections are written into songs bare all like raw nerves, bravely telling the story of his own coming of age with a sense of wisdom that feels many years removed from its events. These stories, including previous singles “Your Desire in Food,” “Sewn Up and Handsome” and “75 Germany,” form the core of Flanagan’s forthcoming debut album.

To commemorate the album’s release, Superfan will be performing a string of live shows this July in NYC, San Francisco and LA with support from Quiet Light, Operelly, and Autobahn.

Written between the Falls of 2022 and 2023, Tow Truck Jesus is 11 intricate chronological songs that capture Flanagan undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy and coming of age as a young man, with his voice settling into a gravelly lower register as well as finding comfort in young adulthood and his relationship with himself and love. The new music features overdriven detuned guitars and Casio keyboards with a charming likeness to the intimate indie rock of the 2000s.

Superfan has been the driving force behind his music, serving as singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer simultaneously. On Tow Truck Jesus, he embraces a new approach, drawing inspiration from the challenges and feedback of former collaborator Tony Berg and working with producer Gabriel Wax (Soccer Mommy, Adrianne Lenker). He opted to restrict himself to a single instrument during the songwriting phase and gradually build out the songs. The results are raw and stripped-down songs that amplify his exceptional voice and lyrics, anchored by the levity of the album’s title, which stems from a shared jest between Flanagan and his father, Patrick, who joked that when the hitch of a tow truck is raised, it resembles a cross.

Stream “When You Come To LA” and pre-save/order Tow Truck Jesus above, find upcoming live dates below, and stay tuned for more Superfan coming soon.

TEHYA RELEASES HER SECOND SINGLE “BISCUITS & GRAVY” ON NEON GOLD RECORDS

TEHYA RELEASES HER SECOND SINGLE “BISCUITS & GRAVY” ON NEON GOLD RECORDS HERE

DEBUT “CROWD PLEASER” HERE

TEHYA - artist photo credit: contradash

Today, Filipino-Native American singer songwriter TEHYA caps off AAPI Heritage Month with the release of her sophomore single “biscuits & gravy”. Hailing from LA via Seattle, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist released her debut “crowd pleaser” (produced with Rence and Contradash) in March. Her new R&B-tinged “biscuits & gravy” is produced by TEHYA, Contradash and Doc Daniel (Natalie Jane, Rei Ami).

TEHYA becomes the latest superstar-in-waiting to join the lengthy lineage of alt pop favorites at Neon Gold Records, the celebrated independent label that first put out Charli XCX, Tove Lo, MARINA, Christine and The Queens, and many more.

TEHYA says: “I wanted to lean into something different with biscuits, just to exercise that creative muscle and push my range in directions it hasn’t been too often. The track itself is me just talking my shit after arguably the toughest breakup I’ve experienced. It encompasses that universal feeling of empowerment post-breakup: knowing your ex will genuinely never be able to find or emulate the greatness that was and will always be, you.”

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest in the crosshairs of her ancestral cultures; Cherokee, Filipino and Scotch-Irish, Tehya was heavily influenced by music and took after her father, a local legend funk drummer, from a young age. After leaving home at 16, she found her community in a Capitol Hill artist compound frequented by some of the biggest names in the Seattle underground rap scene. It was here she picked up production via osmosis, sitting in on sessions and teaching herself Pro Tools and FL whenever a room was going spare. She is self-taught across the board – playing guitar, keys, drums, and writing 100% of her toplines and lyrics – a self-made DIY popstar unbound by genre and ready for the spotlight.

DREW McDOWALL A Thread, Silvered and Trembling - New album out today on Dais Records - Tour starts tonight in New York

DREW MCDOWALL
NEW ALBUM OUT TODAY DAIS RECORDS

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR STARTS TONIGHT IN NY

Potent and powerful.” – The Quietus

Drew McDowall has today released his fifth solo studio album, A Thread, Silvered and Trembling on vinyl and digitally via Dais Recorcds. A North America tour – starting at Le Poisson Rouge in NY – starts tonight with more dates to be added for Europe / UK in the autumn.

Listen to the full album HERE

Scottish experimental / electronic musician McDowall’s lifelong interest in an elegiac solo bagpipe style called pibroch (ceòl mòr in Gaelic) has been an inspiration for much of his previous work (including Coil’s legendary Time Machines). This form, often traditionally used for laments and for tributes to the dead, fuses modal drones with flickering dissonance and plaintive melody evoking an ancient, solemn mood.

His latest work, A Thread, Silvered and Trembling, both incorporates and transforms these elements via exploratory electronic processing, weaving an electro-acoustic tapestry of strings, shudders, voids, and voices, alternately disembodied and displaced. Co-produced with engineer Randall Dunn at Circular Ruin Studios in Brooklyn, the collection’s four pieces capture McDowall at his most elevated and elusive, in thrall to "the ineffable – that which refuses to be spoken."

McDowall’s palette here is unusually eclectic, sourced from a dynamic orchestral ensemble arranged by Brent Arnold and comprised of cello, viola, violin, harp (Marilu Donovan of LEYA), and French horn. Ebbing between shrouded electronics and enigmatic, sometimes spectralist orchestration, the album moves with a seething, simmering energy, surging into elegant, uneasy crescendos. The first two pieces are inspired by a liberatory hijacking and inversion of a grim biblical story (and by a cryptic and strange UK simple syrup branding). Opener ‘Out of Strength Comes Sweetness’ shivers with short echo and resonant pads, before shifting into the album’s centrepiece: the 14-minute saga ‘And Lions Will Sing with Joy’. A murmuring electrical storm of keening strings and disorienting drones gradually grows darker and denser, until suddenly there’s a crack in the clouds, revealing mutated choral voices and sparkling harp. McDowall describes the track as "an incantation to help usher in a break, and a new beginning."

The record’s latter half evokes a deep untamed animism shot through with spiralling radiance. ‘In Wound and Water’ sways with harp, plucked strings and eerie cello undertows while lush layers of disorientated electronics hang in the dusk. There is no resolution, only a faint gradient of fragile dissipation, leading into the album’s harrowing and climactic closer, ‘A Dream of a Cartographic Membrane Dissolves’. Processed voices (credited on the liner notes to "The Ghosts Who Refuse to Rest") contort, whisper, and gather as the rest of the ensemble sharpens, poising to strike. Then it does – grand, tragic stabs of strings and horns lashing the sky, storming heaven by force.

The fallout is poetic and inevitable, raining embers into a dark sea. But the journey and catharsis of A Thread linger long after it goes silent. Like so much of McDowall’s multifaceted catalogue, this is music of immanence and alchemy, attuned equally to the sacred and the profane, to the tile and the mosaic.

The album features collaborations and instrumentation from harpist Marilu Donovan (LEYA), Grammy nominated French Horn player Eric Davis (David Byrne & St. Vincent, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings) and more, and is co-produced by Randall Dunn (John Medeski and Daniel Lopatin's The Curse, Drab Majesty's An Object In Motion, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe's Candyman, Zola Jesus’ Arkhon).

RECENT PRAISE
"EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES?... Agalma is nothing if not cohesive in its lean, slow-burn, low-key psychedelia... This album, buzzing and resonant, draws time thin, pulls it almost transparent like a veil, perhaps disregarding it as a linear concept altogether" - The Quietus review of Agalma

"Agalma drips with spectral textures, angelic backing vocals and glitchy cinematic sweeps formed from warped field recordings and modular processing." – The Wire

"Seeing Drew McDowall live is an experience of equal parts pain and beauty. Simply put, it is the work of a master." – Noisey / Vice

EDITORS NOTES
Drew McDowall is a Scottish born, NYC based composer and musician. He was a member of Coil in the ‘90s contributing heavily to some of their most respected and influential works.

An artist who has refused to conform in music and in life, McDowall mines the hallucinatory spaces that exist between reality and transcendental otherness. His work has been described as “sacraments to alterity”, with meditative compositions that are haunting and spiritual, melding intricate modular soundscapes with acoustic instruments and cut-up field recordings, deconstructing and reconfiguring sounds into otherworldly structures and shapes. The disorienting ambient mirages that result elicit terror, tender melancholy, and always heavenly flickers of expansive beauty.
