CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

September 29, 2023 - Today, art rock rising star Liza Anne released a soberingly tender single, “Internet Depression” from their upcoming studio album, Utopian, due for release on November 3, 2023 via Antifragile Music.

Alongside the release, Liza Anne shared an op-ed on the song exclusively on American Songwriter, check it out HERE

“Internet Depression” is a brutally honest exploration of the cruelty of social media and the disillusioned nature of algorithmic friendships. With its lonesome vocal and piano pairing, “Internet Depression” is a sonic counterpoint to the bright album singles released thus far, leaving ample space for Liza’s haunting vocal to dissect social media’s fake-happy false projections.

Liza stated on “Internet Depression,” “There’s such a strange pain to the Internet when you’re feeling disillusioned with your own life and swallowed in the discomfort and pain. It’s like being constantly confronted with everyone’s best side - of course, it’s not something to take personally but it feels impossible to not compare the worst feeling inside of you to the projection of “everything is great” that you’d come across on social media.

With this song, I was voicing the frustration and disbelief I had in believing that the people around me were actually experiencing feelings of being in love because, within my experience of ‘being in love,’ I was always only half way there - I just thought, for years, that the experience of love was one of projection and dissociation - saying something enough so that hopefully you really meant it eventually. It is so relieving to understand that isn’t the case - I was never meant to be with a cis man because I’m a lesbian.

It is so strange to be feeling so disassociated from yourself as I was seeing it projected on the internet - we have such a direct line of sight to everyone at all times. To have that view while experiencing dysphoria in your own experience is especially heavy - it’s hard to find a home in yourself already and to have that constant reminder of everyone's everything all the time - that’s a lot for a subconscious to hold onto.”

Utopian furthers Liza’s art rock evolution, sonically shifting to encompass an eclectic array of sounds including shimmering dance floor funk, bright new wave, jangly shoe gaze and tender punk.

With the life defining, celebratory coming-out lead single “Cheerleader” being praised as “jubilant and funky” by Stereogum, and NPR music recognizing the beauty of self-discovery inherent to “Rainbow Sweater,” Utopian is already receiving early buzz.  Other album standouts include the glistening and piercingly tender “Treat Me” and the spacious, art-rock masterpiece title track, “Utopian.”

In celebration of the album, Liza Anne will be hosting an album pre-release show, Utopian at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn, NY, on October 27 with special guest FIGHTMASTER. Tickets are available via Dice FM. Click HERE for more info.

From their wider work fighting for reproductive freedom through their ABBA Discos initiative, leading a queer poetry celebration at Housing Works NYC, or recent debut acting (and soundtracking) in indie horror short “Boyhoarder,” Liza is a visionary bringing the fringe to the mainstream, and an iconoclast ripping down the norms of the boring generation.

Written over the course of three years–and over three years ago, for Liza, Utopian was the safe space they created for their queer experience while still being closeted and in a relationship that was actively inhibiting their true self. Reflecting on the central message of the album, Liza shares, “With this record I was projecting myself forward into a reality that made sense to me and out of the heaviness of existing in a world (and a toxic relationship) where I was experiencing disassociation from myself because of being closeted. Not just queerness but so much of who I was, what I felt, what I cared about, what meant something to me was not welcome in the space of that relationship. Utopian is, to me, a scared reinhabiting of myself that started as merely a dream - I spent 3 years inside of a relationship where I needed an escape and I spent nearly 29 years of my life closeting myself and trying to ignore who I was - with the writing of that record I was detailing a world where I was out, joyful, forgiving, surrounded by love that made sense to me and able to grow and grieve and feel and emote in a healthy way.

September 29, 2023 — (Hollywood, CA) — Today, globally adored British pop star Mae Muller shares her debut album, Sorry I'm Late along with new track “Nervous (In A Good Way).” Listen to the album HERE and “Nervous (In A Good Way)” HERE.

Sorry I’m Late is a message to fans who have stuck by Mae during a period of growth and self-discovery. The album strikes an unforgettable balance of soulful vulnerability and exhilarating confidence. The 26-year-old North London native opens up about all the love and loss she’s experienced in recent years, infusing every song with her strong-minded yet irresistibly playful point of view. And while Sorry I’m Late unfolds with a lived-in intimacy and enthralling specificity, Mae captures so many of the frustrations and tensions shared by her generation. The result: a wildly cathartic celebration of today’s young women and all their infinite complexity.

In addition to the thrilling self-possession of her recent cut Written By A Woman,” Sorry I’m Late includes past hits like I Just Came To Dance and I Wrote A Song (a high-energy anthem that became the No. 1 trending song in the UK and shot to No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart after Mae represented the UK in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest) MTJL (an emotional ballad which finds Mae musing over her insecurities ultimately reconciling; “maybe that’s just life,”) lead track, "Me, Myself & I" and smash hit Better Days (a platinum-certified collaboration with NEIKED and Polo G).

The album marks the follow-up to Mae’s Capitol Records debut EP no one else, not even you: a critically lauded 2020 project including standouts like “Dependent” (named one of Billboard's 30 Best Pop Songs of 2020). She’s been crowned “a clear pop sensation in the making” by Wonderland and the “new queen” by NYLON, in addition to earning praise from The Fader, Billboard, GQ, Paper, and more. Hailed as one of the “best songs of 2021” by the Los Angeles Times, Mae’s breakout hit “Better Days” with NEIKED x Polo G earned platinum certification in the U.S. and Canada and emerged as a Top 10 radio airplay smash, while her music has amassed almost 3 billion streams worldwide.
