The Warlocks at Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever, September 22, Los Angeles CA

The Warlocks at Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever, September 22, Los Angeles CA

Come see the legendary rock band The Warlocks live at the iconic Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever, September 22

The Warlocks will be playing tracks from their new album “In Between Sad” along with all their hits of their two-decade career! Get your tickets here:

Formed in 1999, L.A.-based group The Warlocks produce a relentless, hypnotic wall of sound that suggests a collision between classic psychedelia, Krautrock and The Velvet Underground. Front man Bobby Hecksher grew up in the swamps of Tampa Bay, FL but moved to L.A. at age 16 where he soon found kindred spirits, jamming with Beck on his Stereopathetic Soulmanure album and moonlighting in the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

The band’s debut album Rise & Fall (Bomp 2000) set out their template, but it was the band's signing to a worldwide deal with Mute and the release of Phoenix (2003) that raised their profile significantly. Several albums followed including 2005’s Surgery, 2007’s Heavy Deavy Skull Lover, 2009’s The Mirror Explodes, and 2020's The Chain. Relentless international touring and the sheer power of The Warlocks gigantic live sound has built a worldwide cult following for the band that has only grown and intensified.

Longtime L.A.-psych rockers The Warlocks — led for the past twenty-plus years by Bobby Hecksher (vocals, guitar), who's backed by J.C. Rees (guitar), Earl V. Miller (guitar), Christopher DiPino (bass), and Oscar Ruvalcaba (drums) are back with a new album "In Between Sad" out September 22, 2023, on Cleopatra Records.

• A deeply moving, immensely heavy new album from the kings of L.A. psych rock scene, The Warlocks!

• Written in the wake of his brother's passing from cancer, frontman Bobby Hecksher crafts one of the most intimate, intensely personal albums of his 25+ year career!

• Recorded in the spirit of experimentalism, the album incorporates instruments and sounds not used on any previous Warlocks' album, such as 808 drum machines and classic '80s keyboards!

• To support the album, The Warlocks are launching the "In Between Sad" tour starting with a slew of international dates in October and November!

“This album is for people that have lost someone. It’s a heavy album. It’s a sad album. Listen on that rainy day, on the subway or bus with your headphones in and sadness in your throat. It’s the album I didn’t want to release but I guess HAD to. We’ve all got to move forward. This one’s for my brother Robert - may he rest in peace. Much love." - Bobby / The Warlocks

Today Alabaster DePlume shares a new single, “Greek Honey Slick,” featuring drummer Tom Skinner (The Smile, Sons of Kemet), the second offering from his forthcoming album Come With Fierce Grace (out September 8th on International Anthem).

In the context of the full album, “Greek Honey Slick” is in the middle of a four-track run of music that was originally created in a session where the saxophonist DePlume and drummer Skinner improvised together, alone as a duo. As the story goes, it was at Total Refreshment Centre studios in London in 2020, during DePlume’s several weeks-long recording session for what became his lauded 2022 album GOLD. It was supposed to be a full ensemble on this particular date, but all of the other musicians bailed, except for Skinner. DePlume did what he often does: he chose to embrace the circumstances, not knowing why. He and Skinner proceeded to record a bunch of music that didn’t make sense to be released as part of GOLD, but turned out to be a perfect fit for Come With Fierce Grace.

Reflecting on his choice to embrace the unplanned duo session with Skinner, DePlume says:
“Before I recorded GOLD, I dropped an enormous metal tin of beautiful Greek honey on my studio floor. Heart-broken, I gathered it into my hands to be disposed of, which took ages. But I chose to embrace this too - not knowing why. And it turned out that it was a blessing for the making of that specific album (though I won’t say why, just now). The key thing for me is: embracing what is, without demanding to know why. Abundance and how it is, and how it can appear, and made welcome.”

And Tom Skinner adds:
“I don’t remember much about the details of the session at all, other than that it was a welcome oasis of spontaneous music-making in what had become an otherwise arid and disheartening year. A glorious and joyous exploration of sound in time.”

To round out the sound on “Greek Honey Slick,” DePlume added synth and bass guitar, overdubbing himself over his saxophone & drumkit improvisations with Skinner, almost two years after the initial session. The resulting work is a borderline club banger – “Greek Honey Slick” is definitely one of the more hype moments on the generally subdued, lilting and placid Come With Fierce Grace.

Following a run of European shows opening for Bon Iver, Alabaster’s tour dates continue to expand - with a whole month of shows spanning the United States. Full list of shows below.

ABOUT THE RECORD

In order to record the compositions in his critically-acclaimed 2022 release GOLD, Alabaster DePlume instilled a culture of creativity by leading his ensembles in spontaneous composition and development. To allow them to be present, he kept the musicians constantly creating across several weeks of sessions at London creative hub Total Refreshment Centre. This process resulted in an abundance of material, much more than he could fit onto the initial double LP. After spending most of 2022 touring in support of GOLD, Alabaster spent much of early 2023 revisiting the additional material from those Total Refreshment Centre sessions – adding, subtracting, producing and arranging – resulting in an entirely new album, Come With Fierce Grace.

Come With Fierce Grace is an album made entirely of authentic and unstipulated – yet welcomed – human interaction. It is for the most part an album of instrumentals, with exception of a few vocal features by Momoko Gill, Falle Nioke, and Donna Thompson. Though the instrumentals on this album are much more embryonic and unfiltered than the lush orchestrations heard on Alabaster’s breakout 2020 album To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1Come With Fierce Grace is perhaps the most raw and candid portrait of Alabaster’s creative compositional process we’ve yet to hear, as he’s captured vividly in the room with his collaborators –  stretching, exploring, working to deepen and expand the emotions underlying his melodic and poetic frameworks. Regarding the process, Alabaster cites a similarity to how elements in nature contribute to shared work and beauty without a collective motive – a bee’s own motives result in the delivery of pollen. As he says: “The great thing wants to happen, let us allow it to happen.”

Regarding the origin of the album’s name: On his first trip to perform in the US in March 2022, Alabaster collected messages from individuals, as he asked them if there is anything they would like him to share with his audiences. One message (from a person who preferred to remain anonymous) asked Alabaster to encourage people to “come with fierce grace.”

(July 31, 2023) - Toronto-based DJ and producer BAMBII shares "Hooked," the final single to be released from her debut EP Infinity Club, out this Friday via Innovative Leisure. Hailed as a key player in the resurgence of jungle in Toronto by Rolling Stone, BAMBII enlists Aluna, one of the pioneering vocalists of the UK's early 2010's dance/electronic scene on her latest offering.

"Hooked" combines 90's R&B bass-lines with Aluna's classic layered vocals providing listeners with a sound reminiscent of Aaliyah's late reign. A testament to BAMBII's masterful production abilities, the DJ and producer finds ways to add something new to every 30 seconds with this subdued pop anthem. The new track follows her previous releases, "Wicked Gyal" featuring Lady Lykez, and "One Touch," and "Slip Slide" feat. Ragz Originale (Skepta, FKA Twigs, SOPHIE) and Lamsi.

In this year alone, BAMBII has seen a number of successes. Just last month, her single "One Touch" was deemed Best New Track by Pitchfork and was also included in Apple's new Macbook Air commercial. Additionally, through her contributions to Kelela's crticially acclaimed album Raven, "Contact" was included in former President Obama's Summer 2023 playlist.

On her upcoming project, Infinity Club finds BAMBII building on her already-impressive sonic repertoire, encapsulating the sound of a generation of Caribbean youth living between two worlds. On the heels of bringing her kinetic production style to Kelela's recent album Raven, this new EP establishes BAMBII as a trailblazing voice in the intersecting worlds of electronic and Caribbean music. The project opens the door to a limitless space that blurs the lines between memories and dreams, anchored by ecstatic production by BAMBII that centers on the solace one can find in the middle of a crowded dance floor. In BAMBII's telling, Infinity Club soundtracks an anonymous space holding a community of bodies all flowing to the same rhythm: "Infinity Club knows no age, or social construct. It's for everyone, everywhere. In all ways, always."

Check out "Hooked" featuring Aluna above, see more project details below, and stay tuned for more from BAMBII coming soon.
