The release of Lanterns in 2013 was a breakout moment for Son Lux. Fans, critics, and musicians were drawn into the album’s otherworldly vortex of sound. NPR described Lanterns as the "most fully realized Son Lux album," noting that the music rested “comfortably at the nexus of 21st-century R&B, hip-hop and synthpop.” Album tracks like “Easy”, and “Lost It To Trying” earned millions of streams online, and were covered/sampled by pop stars around the globe. The glowing success of Lanterns cast a bright light on the future of Son Lux, providing a strong signal of things to come. Pre-order Alternate Forms HERE.

Son Lux has evolved in unexpected ways since the release of Lanterns, as evidenced in their recent performance with David Byrne and Stephanis Hsu as part of their Academy Award nominated song, This Is A Life, from the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Son Lux also received a second Academy Award nomination and BAFTA for their score of the film). Alternate Forms celebrates that journey, while honoring the collaborative spirit of Lanterns

Collaboration is a foundational element in the creative process of Son Lux, and Lanterns featured a remarkable cast of guest musicians, including Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers), Peter Silberman (The Antlers), DM Stith, Lily & Madeleine, Cat Martino, Kate Davis, Darren King (Mutemath), Ieva Berberian (Gem Club) and yMusic (Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver). Lanterns also marked the first appearance of Son Lux guitarist Rafiq Bhatia.

Alternate Forms offers an equally formidable set of contributors, featuring Kishi Bashi, Sen Morimoto, KAINA, Sedcairn, Sound of Ceres, Chris Pattishall, Vuyo Sotashe, Jordan Munson, Isaiah Robinson, Anna B Savage, DM Stith, vōx, Alex Tanas, Kilmanzego, and Omari Jazz. The album’s artwork has also been reimagined by Lanterns cover art designers Ryan Sievert and Anthony Ciannamea.

The lead single from Alternate Forms, Kishi Bashi’s “Alternate World (Alternate Life)”, sets the tone for the entire album. Kishi Bashi has reimagined the song in his own voice, creating a wholly new mood and arrangement, laced with his signature pop magic. Son Lux and Kishi Bashi were labelmates at Joyful Noise Recordings at the time of Lanterns’ release. Both artists share an uncommon ability to create sweeping symphonic landscapes in the confined space of a four minute pop song.

The members of Son Lux welcome radical reinterpretation of their music, and Alternate Forms is overflowing with bold reinvention – from Kilamanzego’s glitch hop take on “Plan the Escape (Sirens and Tremors)”, to Chris Pattishall and Vuyo Sotashe’s artful torch song reading of “Easy (Fight to Forget)”. Though Alternate Forms freely mixes genre and style, the collected recordings retain the extraordinary sonic power of Lanterns, flowing together in a spellbinding aural experience, full of unexpected sounds and textures.

Alternate Forms takes a different approach to the concept of an anniversary reissue, that’s fitting, as experimenting with form is integral to the music of Son Lux. Alternate Forms celebrates the album’s innovative musical achievements, while honoring the unconventional creative spirit of Son Lux.
