SUICIDE (Alan Vega and Martin Rev)’s third studio album, 1988’s A Way of Life, is set to receive a 35th Anniversary release on 26 May 2023, via Mute / BMG: https://suicide.lnk.to/AWayOfLifePR
A Way of Life will be available on transparent blue vinyl (with art card and two bonus tracks), CD (with 4-page booklet and five bonus tracks) and digitally. The unreleased bonus tracks were all discovered by Jared Artaud whilst he was working on the Vega Vault archives; artwork design and concept was created by Artaud and Michael Handis, the art direction team behind 2022’s Surrender album artwork, and the album was remastered by Denis Blackham of Skye Mastering, who worked on Surrender, as well as the recent remastered reissues of Suicide’s first and second albums.
Listen to an unreleased version of Suicide’s 1988 live cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’ here: https://youtu.be/Ksexm3gkBSQ (decades later, Springsteen would return the compliment with this memorable cover of ‘Dream Baby Dream’).
Originally released in 1988, more than a decade after their game-changing self-titled album, A Way of Life features classic Suicide tracks ‘Surrender’, ‘Jukebox Baby 96’ and ‘Dominic Christ’, and saw Alan Vega & Martin Rev once again team up with The Cars’ frontman Ric Ocasek to produce the album. Martin Rev explains: "The first session was scheduled for about 2PM. Ric [Ocasek] wasn't there yet, only the engineers, so Alan and I just started to warm up and, in the process, started writing some new songs. The engineers decided among themselves to set the recorder rolling and when Ric came in an hour or two later ready to work, he asked the engineers if we had already sound checked. They said "yeah and they basically recorded the whole album". Ric was amazed and started immediately to listen to what became the first mixes of A Way of Life.”
Suicide formed in the early 70s, reemerging in 1976 at the heart of the New York punk scene. Their debut album - which was given barely any credit at the time - has had an incalculable influence since its release in 1977, and went on to feature in numerous magazine’s Greatest Albums of All Time lists. The minimalist duo's visionary creations revolved around multi-instrumentalist Martin Rev and visual artist / vocalist Alan Vega's unparalleled sonic chemistry, which resulted in riot-fuelled live shows that have become legendary in the history of rock n roll. “Everybody came in to see Suicide to be entertained,” Alan Vega said, “and all we did was give them back the street, in all its glory." The volume of artists and musicians they went on to inspire throughout the decades is huge, with New Order, Depeche Mode, Bruce Springsteen, KLF, Spiritualized, Moby, Soft Cell, The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Sisters of Mercy, Primal Scream and Nick Cave just a few who have acknowledged their debt to the duo. Suicide continued releasing and performing for 40 years, until 2015’s acclaimed Punk Mass at the Barbican in London and Alan Vega’s passing in July 2016.
