Today, Los Angeles-based Colombian-Canadian singer-songwriter, producer, and artist Tei Shiannounces her highly anticipated BAD PREMONITION EP due March 17th. Coinciding with the announcement, Tei Shi shares her new single, "¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?" Co-produced alongside Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly and Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jake Portrait (both recently produced Lil Yachty’s highly acclaimed album Let’s Start Here), the sultry and empowering bilingual track touches on the frustration, manipulation, and deceit Tei Shi underwent when she was under contract by her then-label. The news arrives in the midst of Tei Shi’s lengthy North American tour in support of Kimbra and follows her catwalk debut for Elena Velez’s highly lauded Fall 2023 show (full tour dates and ticket info here).

Both "¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?" and her forthcoming EP, BAD PREMONITION, were born after an emotionally fraught period in which she was given false hope, broken promises, and lost her freedom as an artist. Speaking on the single and her musical journey Tei Shi recalls, "‘¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?’ is a song about deception. It tells the tale of deceit - of trusting in others and as a result ending up losing control over oneself to them. When I wrote it, I had gone through a series of consecutive situations in the music industry where I'd been locked into contracts that ultimately took away my freedom as an artist and my ability to release music and move forward with my career. After ending up in a final similar situation, I went through the long and arduous process of getting my freedom and independence back. She says, ‘The saying 'Quién te manda' is difficult to translate into English. It means 'who sent you,' but in sentiment, it means something like a combination of 'who told you to do that' and 'told you so.' It's a way of telling someone they messed up, and the blame is on them. I've always loved this phrase, and with this song, it took on an empowered meaning for me - in telling off someone who wronged me. At the same time, there's a question of 'quién te manda' to myself…of realizing my own role in being manipulated. My upcoming EP, 'BAD PREMONITION’, is made up of songs I wrote during this journey."

BAD PREMONITION is a deeply personal body of work underpinned by a powerful message of resilience and comprised of heartfelt and emotional songs that span across six tracks, including previously released singles "GRIP" and "BAD PREMONITION". Together the combination of songs showcases Tei Shi's musical journey, rebirth, and diversity as both an artist and performer navigating both heartbreak and the toxic and exploitative facets of the music industry.

Expanding on the EP, Tei Shi shares, “My EP ‘BAD PREMONITION’ is a personal and emotional journey, where I realized that I had been fooled again and found myself in the same place I tried so hard to avoid. The feeling of losing control over my work and life, disregarding the warning signs and uneasy gut feelings, ultimately led to a rediscovery of my power and purpose as an artist. Through this journey, I was able to reclaim my confidence and focus and let go of the past, leading to a euphoric feeling of rebirth.

I went through this process over the past 2.5 years and wrote songs along the way that restored my faith and helped me remember who I was as an artist. This EP is made up of 6 of those songs, which I can now share as a fully independent artist. :)"

Additionally, Tei Shi announced earlier this week that she will embark on a string of North American tour dates this Spring in support of her forthcoming EP. The tour tailing the release of the EP, will kick off on April 13th in New York and close on April 22nd in San Francisco, hitting ten cities. Tickets are on sale now; full tour dates and info below.

MORE ABOUT TEI SHI

Tei Shi (pronounced “tay-shee”) is the moniker of singer/songwriter and producer Valerie Teicher. Growing up between Bogotá, Colombia, and Vancouver, Canada, Tei Shi is heavily influenced by her ever-changing environment and cross-cultural identity.

Since her first two EPs, Saudade (2013) and Verde (2015) “introduced her to the world as a skilled and fluid vocalist… [Tei Shi] has fully stepped into her own, brewing up confections centered on trusting your own intuition.” (Pitchfork). Her groundbreaking song “Bassically” garnered over 17 million streams on Spotify alone and set the scene for her critically acclaimed debut album Crawl Space (2017), which was highly revered by the likes of NPR, The New Yorker, Pitchfork, The Fader and The Guardian, and projected her as one of today’s most influential multidisciplinary acts.

On the heels of the Crawl Space release, Tei Shi embarked on world tours and made headway in the art and fashion world, partnering with culturally iconic brands like MoMA, Helmut Lang, Northface, Glossier, ACNE and Collina Strada, as well as collaborating with Blood Orange on his album Negro Swan. In addition to joining him onstage at 2019’s Coachella Music Festival, Tei Shi also starred in Blood Orange’s video for “Hope” alongside Diddy, A$AP Rocky, and Tyler the Creator.

In November of 2019, Tei Shi released La Linda, her much-anticipated second full-length album. Emotionally evocative and sonically daring, “the 11-track project sees Tei Shi more self-assured and fully formed than ever” (i-D). On this album, Tei Shi embraces her Latin roots and multicultural identity, seamlessly shifting between the languages and musical genres that make her such a unique songwriter and noteworthy artist.

In March 2020, after breaking out of a toxic label dynamic, she embarked on a North American tour supporting Blood Orange, which was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after, during the height of the lockdown, she released her EP Die 4 Ur Love

Her new singles “GRIP”, “BAD PREMONITION”, and “¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?” mark the beginning of a new chapter for Tei Shi as a truly independent artist. The songs discuss the disappointment and anger brought about by some of her experiences in the music industry, and pave the way for a breadth of new material set to be released throughout 2023.
