Bass Drum Of Death Share New Video / Playing LA Tonight / Album Out January 27th On Fat Possum Records

Today, Bass Drum Of Death share 'Head Change'the Zeppelin-esque third song taken from their forthcoming album, Say I Won't, released January 27th via Fat Possum Records. Bandleader John Barrett says of the track,"We kind of wanted a mid-tempo psych stomper, and really didn’t change a whole lot from the demo. We added the dueling guitar bridge in the studio spur of the moment, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts on the whole record." Watch the video HERE.

The band shared two tracks previously, the midtempo bruiser 'Say Your Prayers' (a collaboration with Mike Kerr of Royal Blood) and the hi-octane 'Find It' (the video features live footage from the band's sold out New York show in June of this year). Say I Won’t, comes at a time of massive change for Barrett, having relocated from New York to his hometown of Oxford, Mississippi during the pandemic. The record is also a homecoming of a different sort, with the band rejoining the ranks of Fat Possum, also in Oxford, the label that released their first record GB City in 2011.

The point of an odyssey is to return home changed—still the same person, but deepened somehow, wiser and better, wearing your traveling scars proudly. Bass Drum of Death’s new album is the end result of a journey that took singer and bandleader John Barrett from a small town in Mississippi and sent him across the world and back home again. The music still rips, with blown-out guitars and drums, and the melodies are catchier than ever, hollered in Barrett’s trademark yelp. But the music hits differently now, more at peace with itself, propelled by a new swagger. Say I Won’t is the record of a veteran band finding its stride and leaning into it, stripping back the excess and finding the raw core of their sound.

“Moving back to Oxford was a much-needed reset,” says Barrett. “When I started, I just wanted to play in a punk band and drink beers and travel around. I didn’t really think much past that. And I got really burned out. When I moved back home, I started writing songs again, just for fun. I realized I wanted this record to have more of a hometown feel. The switch back to Fat Possum was easy. It’s much better working with people I know and love and love everything they do.”

Say I Won’t is the first Bass Drum of Death album written, demoed, and recorded with the touring band instead of Barrett doing everything on his own. He found a freedom in working with collaborators that wasn’t available to him before, opening different aspects of the songwriting. It was a process of live recording, layering on different parts and overdubs, and then stripping it all back to the bones of the song, keeping the raw wild heart of the music intact.

“My first two records were made entirely by me alone with my gear, my laptop, and a Snowball USB mic,” says Barrett. “They were just made quickly, cheaply, as an excuse to tour. I wanted to take my time with this record. Make something good that I was proud of in itself.”

The band recorded the new record with Patrick Carney of the Black Keys at Audio Eagle Studios in Nashville and the result is a groove-oriented, 1970’s-indebted collection of rock songs, with tempos set for cruising and scuzzy guitars galore. There’s an energy and vitality to the music that feels in line with the best of the Bass Drum songs, but with an added boost that comes from new bandmates and a new perspective.

The album finds a reinvigorated Barrett firing at all cylinders, backed by his best band yet. It’s Bass Drum of Death at their loosest and scuzziest and most tuneful, a true rock record in all the right ways. It’s a throwback by way of moving forward, sporting a maturity and swagger that comes from a decade of playing music on the road and surviving to tell about it. More than anything, Say I Won’t is a blast to listen to, music built for driving with your stereo cranked.

“I had to relearn that making music is fucking fun,” says Barrett, “and you should have fun doing it. If it’s miserable, what’s the point?” He laughs. “But man, when a song hits, it’s the best feeling in the world. That’s what this record is about. Getting back to that good place and staying there.”

KING TUFF RELEASES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE, “PORTRAIT OF GOD”

KING TUFF RELEASES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE, “PORTRAIT OF GOD”

King Tuff shares a wild video for “Portrait of God,” the rollicking new single from his recently announced new album, Smalltown Stardust, out January 27th via Sub Pop.

“If you were to ask me what my religion is I would say 3 things: Music, Art, and Nature. Those are the things I’ve dedicated my life to and which bring me the purest of joy,” Thomas explains. “Often when I’m making art or music I feel something guiding me- call it god, call it Magic, call it Jim… whatever it is, it makes me happy! My god is probably something totally different than yours, and that’s a beautiful thing! I was thinking about that one day, so I wrote this song. What does your god look like? Is it a frog sitting atop a mushroom? A fifteen headed cobra? A swirling vortex? Old white guy with a long white beard is the only wrong answer!”

At the core of Smalltown Stardust lies Thomas’s desire to commune with nature on a spiritual level. Images of the natural world, from blizzards to green mountains to cloudy days, fill the songs and create a setting unmistakably far away from Los Angeles, as evidenced in the “Portrait of God” video, shot in the rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula. “It’s one of my favorite places on Earth, perhaps the most magical forest I’ve ever seen! It was honestly hard to concentrate on making the video when there was so much mossy love around us,” says Thomas. The video, directed by Nicola and Juliana Giraffe, co-stars SASAMI, who also co-wrote and co-produced the album.

Last month, King Tuff announced the album with a video for the title track “Smalltown Stardust,” which Consequence praised as “a triumphant return,” Rolling Stone called a ‘Song You Need To Know’ and Paste named one of the ‘Best Songs of the Week’ saying it’s “warped in unexpected ways.”

King Tuff is hitting the road next year in support of Smalltown Stardust. The North American tour kicks off March 1st in San Diego, CA and wraps April 7th at Joshua Tree, CA with a show at Pappy and Harriets. All dates below.

FRANCE’S POMME RELEASES VIDEO FOR “VERY BAD” + DEBUT LIVE SHOWS IN LA AND NY (sold out)

FRANCE’S POMME SHARES “VERY BAD” VIDEO HERE

DEBUT LIVE SHOWS:
12.12 - LOS ANGELES @ TERAGRAM ROOM
12.14 - NEW YORK @ BOWERY BALLROOM (SOLD OUT)

Today, Pomme - Claire Pommet’s artist name - the unique French singer-songwriter shares the self-directed music video for her english language track “Very Bad” here, in advance of her first ever Los Angeles and New York (sold out) shows. Pomme gained exposure thanks to her deeply mature and sensitive lyrics, as well as her delicate one of a kind vocals. She is also involved in feminism, women’s rights and queer movements.

Pomme says: “The music video for “Very Bad” is kind of an antithesis. It’s the opposite of the meaning of the song. So the song is kind of direct. It’s about systemic sexism and the fact that men often are attracted to younger women in our society. And I just wanted to do a cute, sweet and soft video clip. Which is the opposite of what I’m talking about in the song.

Cause it was really important to me that like the meaning of the song didn’t make it violent and I wanted people to watch something cute. So that the lyrics may be “softer” and more universal.

Also I love my dog : Pizzaghetti.

She is a 3-year-old golden retriever, and she is the cutest being on earth. So I just wanted to celebrate her, and to tell the world that she is better than any men, yeah.”

The new song “Very Bad” is not entirely the first time she ventured out with English language music. Her latest album Consolation includes “when I c u” for instance, and last January, she collaborated with Norwegian artist Aurora. Their duet “Everything Matters” has been streamed +25M. In 2020 she made a cover of Feist’s song “The Park” on the Goodnight Songs For Rebel Girls’ compilation.

In spring 2022 the French singer embarked on a European tour and released a third album on August 26, Consolation. The critically acclaimed project includes “Nelly” (tribute to Canadian author Nelly Arcan), the single “jardin” along with the music video. In February 2020 Pomme won the Best Newcomer award at Victoires de la Musique (aka French GRAMMYS) for her second album Les failles and was named “Best Female Artist” in the year afterward.

After recording Consolation in Canada and playing a couple of live shows there, Pomme is returning to play live in Montréal and is embarking on her first Los Angeles and New York adventures.

“captivating audiences with celestial vocals and vulnerable lyricism” Ones To Watch

Pomme live:
Mon 12.12 - Los Angeles, CA @ Teragram Room HERE
Wed 12.14 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom - SOLD OUT

Masters of simplicity, pairing unshakeable pop hooks with classic indie sounds, their unique combination of up-beat and heartfelt songwriting has earned Bad Bad Hats acclaim from fans and critics alike. Defined by a balance of sweet and sour, their music honors classic pop songwriting, with nods to nineties rock simplicity and pop-punk frivolity. The common thread across their catalog is Alexander’s unique lyrical voice and the joyful exuberance the band brings to their songwriting and their live shows.

The band has shared stages with The Beths, Hippo Campus, Michelle Branch, Third Eye Blind, The Front Bottoms, and many others. Today, they have announced a special It Hurts EP (10th Anniversary Edition) hometown throwdown concert on February 4 at First Avenue's 7th Street Entry. The show will be a double-header (early show and late show), with special guest Beemer. Public on-sale: Friday, December 2 at 11amCST.

Bad Bad Hats was formed in 2012 by Kerry Alexander (vocals/guitar/lyrics) and Chris Hoge (guitar/bass). They have released three full-length albums (Psychic Reader (2015), Lightning Round (2018), and Walkman (2021)) and two EPs, including their much-loved debut, It Hurts (2013), which celebrates its 10th anniversary this January.

"MYNK make quite the impact with visceral yet melancholic debut single 'Boundaries,' with an edgy but minimal pop soundscape meditating on the various boundaries we set in our lives."
EARMILK
MYNK are a London-based band who formed under the shackles of isolation. They quickly discovered their sound through the creation of remote demos before teaming up with frontman and producer Faris Badwan (The Horrors, Cat’s Eyes) and Max Heyes (Primal Scream, Massive Attack) to record their debut single "Boundaries," out now via all DSPs. As shown via their first track, the band draw influence from a wide range of both audio and visual art, from minimalist pop to David Lynch, resulting in a visceral combination of pop-noir melancholia.

Speaking on their debut, the band wrote:

"The track is about the boundaries we set in order to function in  different situations/relationships; the crossing of sacrifice and habit  meets somewhere in the middle to maintain a connection. It’s about the relatable internal questioning of ‘do I/don’t I?’ and where that  takes you, and how you can lose yourself in it.”

Stay tuned for more new music from MYNK, coming soon.
