Ada Rock (formerly Black Dresses) > hear single "Arbiter"

ADA ROOK
(FORMERLY OF BLACK DRESSES)

SHARES NEW SINGLE

ARBITER

LISTEN ON MARINE SNOW HERE

As half of the cult-favorite, now-defunct noise-dance duo Black Dresses, Toronto’s Ada Rook has plenty of experience shouting about existential dread atop abrasive electronics. This may well be her most aggressive, disconsolate song to date.

A blitzkrieg mashup of jungle percussion, rapid-fire synth stuttering, and Rook’s unyielding growl, the track is equally indebted to the thrash of metal and the transcendence of a pitch-black midnight rave. Themes of disappearance, disconnection, and starting over sometimes break through Rook’s snarling; at other times, her bloodcurdling screams mask her words. Yet you never need to know what she’s saying: Here the medium – equally violent and liberatory – is the message too.

The song is from an upcoming project called BLACK BOX DAMAGE INDICATOR which is about lost girls in love trying to kill their memory of the world and each other.
