Thank San Diego for giving us Iron Butterfly, Blink-182 & Stone Temple Pilots but it’s got another distinction now. In 2019, a group of wise-beyond-their-years SD teens, singer/guitarist Tuesday Denekas (they/them), drummer Milla Merlini (she/her) and bassist Sasha A'Hearn (she/her), rose like punk-pop phoenix's from the ashes of their previous band to corral guitarist/singer Charlee Berlin (who owned but didn't know how to play her instrument at first) to resurrect Denekas' songs of heartbreak and determination, starting out as the Fluorescents with 2020's noteworthy 'self-titled' EP. Proudly christening themselves The Inflorescence, the band found the right home with Kill Rock Stars to unleash their debut LP Remember What I Look Like (due Summer of 2022). The group faces challenges like juggling high school and college classes, finding all-age venues in town to play and rejecting gender labels as they explain: “in a largely male-dominated industry, we see how undermined we are for being a no-man band, and we see how being on stage empowers alternative girls and non-binary people.”
THE ALBUM
The stunning debut LP Remember What I Look Like, out June 10 on Kill Rock Stars, was conceived during quarantine and draws on the band's inspirations, including indie, punk, emo, grunge and alternative. Tuesday Denekas's songs of shattered, disappointed romance sound triumphant in these infectious songs that are propelled by Milla Merlini's thunderous drums, Sasha A'Hearn's steady, anchoring bass and Charlee Berlin's stinging guitar leads. The confident nine-song album has zero dull spots or wasted songs. Starting with the sinuous, fast-paced “Phantom Feelings” and the resilient, stomping “So Much of Nothing” to the start/stop drama of “Are You Sorry” and the deceptively sweet, bouncy “Last Week” and the hair-pin turns and resilient defiance of “The Truth” to the brief respite from the title track which launches into the epic, gripping “Tomorrow Night” and the desperate grunge power of “The Button,” finishing off with the roaring climax of “Board Game,” it’s a rollercoaster ride of thrills and anguish to strap in for.
About "Board Game"
"Board Game" is probably the most desperate song on the album. At this time in my life I felt very manipulated, like I wasn’t being myself anymore and that the people I surrounded myself with didn’t really care about me at all. I felt like I was just a piece of someone else's puzzle, not my own. Instrumentally and structurally I took a lot of inspiration from the song “Your Best American Girl” by Mitski because of how powerful the instruments sounded. The final line, “I don’t know why but I can’t recognize you anymore.” feels like the perfect way to end this album and ties with the album name, Remember What I Look Like.

Beth Orton Announces First Album In Six Years And Debut For Partisan Records, Weather Alive Out September 23rd
Beth Orton Announces First Album In Six Years And Debut For Partisan Records, Weather Alive Out September 23rd
TITLE TRACK “WEATHER ALIVE” AVAILABLE HERE
JOINS ALANIS MORISSETTE ON EU/UK ARENA TOUR THIS SUMMER, ANNOUNCES UK HEADLINING FALL DATES
English singer/songwriter Beth Orton today announces the September 23 release of her first album in six years and debut for Partisan Records, Weather Alive. For the first time in her career, Orton self-produced the entirety of Weather Alive from her home studio in London. Across eight tracks, Weather Alive hosts an incredible group of collaborators, including jazz poet Alabaster dePlume, The Smile drummer Tom Skinner, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and Mercury Prize nominated bassist Tom Herbert of The Invisible. The musicians locked naturally into Orton’s sensibilities, expanding the new sonic world she created with vulnerability and adding nuanced emotional color to the music.
Following its soulful, hushed opening with Orton intoning over floating piano, lead single “Weather Alive” blooms with steadied percussion. As Orton’s crystalline vocals drift into spoken word, the song swells into an elegant and glassy groove.

“Through the writing of these songs and the making of this music, I found my way back to the world around me,” says Orton, “a way to reach nature and the people I love and care about.”
She continues: “This record is a sensory exploration that allowed for a connection to a consciousness that I was searching for. Through the resonance of sound and a beaten up old piano I bought in Camden Market while living in a city I had no intention of staying in, I found acceptance and a way of healing.”
Weather Alive has no precedent in Beth's previous work. The record conjures a deeply meditative atmosphere which is sustained long after the final note has evaporated. Her voice is held in dreamlike musical suspension as she delivers rich bursts of imagery: steps down to the water's edge, a Welsh choir on the wind, New York's summer streets.
Even when the lyrics lean into stream of consciousness, Orton’s signature storytelling is on frequent display, from the warm, Proust-referencing “Friday Night” (“Though we never do get too close, I still hold you now and then,” Orton sings) and the bittersweet recollections of “Arms Around a Memory” (“Didn’t we make a beautiful life in your eighth-floor walkup that night?”) to the shimmering ambivalence of the seven-minute closer “Unwritten” (“I was sure we made a promise, but you never know”).
Orton has long been regarded as possessing one of the most unique and expressive voices in music – a voice that has grown evermore rich and wise over time. Celebrated for her solo output and collaborations - with everyone from The Chemical Brothers to Bert Jansch, Andrew Weatherall and Jim O'Rourke - Orton has called the new album "a collaboration with time," adding “This old piano really spoke to me and held an emotional resonance I could explore in a way I wasn’t able to on guitar — a depth, or a voice, I’d never worked to before,” she enthuses. “For me, the mood and atmosphere were another instrument. They were always consistent.”
This Summer, Orton will join Alanis Morissette for her European and UK arena tour and play a handful of UK and EU festivals before a headline UK tour through October including a KOKO Camden show on October 9th. See the full list of tour dates below and more info here: https://bethortonofficial.com/tour

About The Melvins The Melvins are one of modern music’s most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 Montesano, Washington, the group founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year), has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band’s nearly 40-year history, they’ve released over 30 original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. Most recently they released the 36-track acoustic collection Five Legged Dog, featuring reinterpretations of some of their heaviest songs as well as covers from their favorite artists. In the course of their discography, they've partnered with Jello Biafra, Mudhoney, and FantĂ´mas for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, the Melvins completed the “51 States in 51 Days” (50 states +DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film “Across The USA in 51 Days.” The current incarnation of the band is Osborne, Crover, and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross/OFF!). Previous line-ups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with Big Business band members Jared Warren and Coady Willis, a four-piece featuring the current trio plus Butthole Surfers’ Jeff Pinkus, as well as Melvins Lite, which partners Osborne and Crover with Mr. Bungle’s Trevor Dunn. Sometimes, if you’re extra lucky, one version of the Melvins will open for the Melvins. # # # |
