A detailed piece of post-breakup reflection, “Sort Of Stranger” arrives as The Greeting Committee’s much-anticipated U.S. headline tour kicks off — see below for the full list of tour dates and venues. Opening on a heartbeat-like rhythm and graceful acoustic guitar, “Sort Of Stranger” is an intimate meditation on the endless ways our loved ones imprint on our daily lives (from the chorus: “If you’re gone, who gets the toothbrush ready?/If you’re gone, I’ll watch too much TV/If you’re gone, how do I go on living?/If you’re gone, how do I go on?”). Like The Greeting Committee’s recently released sophomore album Dandelion, the track reveals frontwoman Addie Sartino’s gift for capturing the nuances of loss, an element channeled in her gorgeously poignant performance on “Sort Of Stranger.” “‘Sort of Stranger’ was originally set to be a part of the Dandelion songs but got cut with the promise it would eventually be released,” Sartino explains. “I’m so grateful we were patient with its growth, because that waiting period allowed us to have our friend Briston Maroney feature on it. He was the absolute missing puzzle piece to this track with both his voice and his beautiful lyricism. It only took a few text/voice memo exchanges for him to make the song just as much his at it is ours.” In creating “Sort Of Stranger,” Maroney recorded all his contributions using only voice memos on his phone, tapping into the D.I.Y. sensibilities he shares with The Greeting Committee. Produced by Jennifer Decilveo (MARINA, FLETCHER, Bat for Lashes) and mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), the final product is both crystalline in clarity and charged with raw emotion. As shown on “Sort Of Stranger,” Maroney matches his warm vocal presence with an unforgettably distinct songwriting voice (the opening lines to his verse: “Call it a cop-out like hating a hometown/Knock on your window with leash in my mouth”). Originally from Knoxville, the 24-year-old musician got his start busking at farmer’s markets, soon moved on to basement gigs, and self-released his debut EP Big Shot in 2017. After putting out a series of EPs written on his own, he then joined forces with co-writers like Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull and Dan Wilson for his full-length debut Sunflower. Released in 2021 and made with acclaimed producer John Congleton, Sunflower is gut-punch of fuzzy power chords, genteel acoustics, deftly-composed pop songs, and hard-charging rockers. Having just performed their show in New York City at Elsewhere (venue upgrade), The Greeting Committee’s tour in support of Dandelion continues through April 9 in their hometown of Kansas City. With several dates in major cities already sold out (including a February 22 show at the legendary Troubadour in Los Angeles), the 20-date run includes an appearance at Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco on February 23 and a newly added second date at Globe Hall in Denver on March 3.
