Plattenbau's Shape / Shifting, out today on Dedstrange. explores the darkest depths of the human soul, with a sound palette ranging from robotic darkwave to ethereal dreampunk with overlays of curated noise. The overarching element is a cinematic atmosphere, lighting scenes about the excesses of humanity. Themes of pluralism roll from one chapter to the next: fantasy and destruction, murder and the afterlife, love and death, oppression and hope, the mundane and the divine. Plattenbau is the third release on Oliver Ackermann's (A Place To Bury Strangers/Death By Audio) new label Dedstrange. RIYL: Joy Division, Wire Suicide & DAF.
In a new music video for “Tomahawk,” from the LP Shape / Shifting, out February 11 on Dedstrange, electronic death rockers Plattenbau ride an undulating synthesizer drone across the centerline to the red-light district of the subconscious mind.
It’s the end of the road for Plattenbau’s Lewis Lloyd, who grinds through this tense, slow-burning track with a menacing, disassociated baritone. . On “Tomahawk,” layers of chilling darkwave noise pile up like twisted sheet metal scraps awaiting the sweet embrace of the trash compactor.
“‘Tomahawk’ is an attempt to describe the chaotic culmination of meta, mundane and just pure mental which defines being a human in the 21st century,” says Lloyd.
In the absurdist music video, Lloyd’s character flails around the liminal spaces of nowhere in particular with his phone in one hand and a hatchet in the other, a frightening suggestion of what could happen if we choose not to like, share or subscribe to a metaverse in collapse.
Plattenbau’s debut LP Shape / Shifting is out TODAY —only on Dedstrange.

About Plattenbau:
Plattenbau formed in 2011 in the dark basement of the former Stasi HQ in East Berlin. Originally strictly a recording project, they jammed over slow grinding death rock for hours and listened back to the tapes into cold dark nights, talking alternate realities, corporate ghost stories, and the death of ideology.
In the years since they have joined the likes of Idles, Preoccupations, Flasher, The Garden, La Luz, and Naomi Punk on stage. Their first US tour in Spring 2016 included dates at Silent Barn (NY), Empty Bottle (Chi), and a run of shows at SXSW. They subsequently toured Europe extensively, and returned to the US for two tours in 2018.
Over the years, frontman Lewis Lloyd’s songs have evolved from wiry and jagged post-punk to taut, ironclad synth fortresses, mechanical and repetitive, brutal and hypnotic. Early themes of fleeting youth and wasted nights have given way to lyrics embodying the excesses and brutalities of our world. Yet somehow these songs remain fun, straddling the ever-fruitful territory between noise and pop.
“Hollywood” is the first single from Plattenbau’s Sophomore album which will be released later this fall. More details to come soon.
