Double Double Whammy (DDW) was born and built on scrappy DIY attitudes, artist- friendly deals, and a deep passion for emotive music. From hand-dubbing cassettes in a college dorm room, to shipping LPs from a cramped partitioned space in the back of Brooklyn’s Silent Barn, to several iterations of home offices, and finally into a humble office in industrial Brooklyn, DDW has shown the staying power and loyal support for a label whose organic growth and moderate success is deeply indebted to a business model that puts the artist first.
The first release on Double Double Whammy, fittingly, was LVL UP’s Space Brothers on October 1st , 2011. LVL UP, a collaborative band started by Michael Caridi and David Benton, set the tone for the pair’s new passion project — DDW. Like LVL UP, Double Double Whammy grew up, learned, evolved, and bloomed alongside its creators. A concept from the minds of two excitable teens with little knowledge of the music industry, entirely fueled by a love of music and an urgency to share it far and wide.
After a series of cassette and 7” releases central to the flourishing SUNY Purchase and adjacent music communities, DDW planted roots in Brooklyn, NY where the label fully bloomed. Between 2014 and 2016, DDW established itself with several successful releases for artists like Frankie Cosmos, Florist, LVL UP, Told Slant, Free Cake For Every Creature, and more.
2016 also saw the departure of David Benton from Double Double Whammy. Following this transitory time for the label, Caridi was introduced to Polyvinyl Records’ owner Matt Lunsford, with whom he found a like-minded ally. Shortly thereafter, the two labels entered into a partnership, with Polyvinyl offering the resources of a well-respected and established label, while Double Double Whammy retained complete control of the label.
Mallory Hawkins joined the label in 2018. Hawkins and Caridi, sharing the same unyielding passion for music and art as well as vision and ethics for Double Double Whammy (and likely the same brain), have run the label alongside each other since then. The two have gone on to release several notable albums from artists like Florist, Hatchie, Lomelda, Hovvdy, Long Beard, and more. The label family continues to grow as the two sign and release with the same rigor and passion that the label was built on ten years ago.
