The latest album from KUNZITE, VISUALS, is available today via Lowly. / Wilder. KUNZITE’s Mike Stroud (Ratatat) and Agustin White (Abuela) note, “We hope we’ve created an album that can be enjoyed both on the dance floor, AND within a sensory deprivation tank.” The duo previously shared a number of vibrant singles from the album, paired with equally vibrant visuals, including “LEMON SWAYZE,” “FROSTY,” “JUPITER,” “SATURN,” “NOVAS” and, most recently, “HALOHEAD.” Today, fans can hear VISUALS in full here: https://kunzite.ffm.to/visuals.opr.
Of the music on the album and the title, the band share:
“We’ve found, as musicians, we’re creating soundscapes that can sometimes trigger visions in the listener, and we’ve always been interested in that very phenomena itself — how music can induce visual experiences in the mind’s eye. Listening to the VISUALS album in sequence, many of the songs start to blend into each other as the album progresses, making for a journey that might pair well with your favorite psychedelic substance of choice.”
“We named the album ‘VISUALS’ half tongue-in-cheek, and half in absolute earnest. It just made sense, given how well creative wizard Bruno Borges (@penabranca) had translated the sounds into color and geometry for the album’s visual art, pointing at that universal landscape that we as humans sometimes have access to experiencing, no matter how weird or alien it might appear to us at the time.”
In addition to the digital release today, look for the album’s vinyl featuring two additional exclusive tracks this fall. “The vinyl release is conceived as a magical item of sorts, with the music spread across two discs and includes a psychedelic etching designed by Bruno on Side 4,” notes Agustin.
The movements of KUNZITE’s Mike Stroud and Agustin White have seen them orbiting around each other, occasionally crossing paths yet consistently admiring each other’s work. The pair traversed the globe separately with their different projects and personal adventures -- Stroud touring with his band Ratatat and White on a spiritual journey exploring yoga, meditation and psychedelics -- while looking to one day do something together. The formation of KUNZITE saw them finally able to merge their minds and mission, with a sound that blends psychedelia with electronic, beat-heavy production and live instrumentation.
