LIVENow is delighted to present Yann Tiersen: Kerber - The Film, a unique cinematic expression and celebration of his soon-to-be-released album, Kerber.

Set in his studio and landmarks across the island of Ushant, this film thoughtfully fuses music and landscape together, creating a world where the tangible and ethereal are one. Passes for Yann Tiersen: Kerber -  The Film, are on sale now via LIVENow, for broadcast on Thursday, August 26 at 3PM ET.

This summer, Yann Tiersen releases Kerber, a new chapter in the artist’s work, one that begins with his most overtly electronic material to date. To celebrate its release, he has partnered with LIVENow to produce a film that captures Tiersen performing each song from the album, set against the stunning backdrop of Ushant.

Yann Tiersen: Kerber, The Film is produced by Up The Game and directed by Kit Monteith. This film is not only an ode to Ushant, but also to the creative process Tiersen has used to produce Kerber. Tiersen spent much of 2020 producing the album, first writing the piano, and then meticulously transforming and processing the electronic sounds to create immersive soundscapes. Like the album, Kerber, the film has been crafted by merging traditional and modern formats.

Director, Kit Monteith, says “We wanted to document an entirely new sound that Tiersen is developing, using analog electronic systems, redefining piano compositions through experimental sampling and synthesis. We hoped to encapsulate the spirit of this within the context of a dynamic performance film. Featuring new and familiar material I used the 35mm camera as my own analog system to explore and abstract the natural spaces of the island. The blend of these digital and real film elements mirror the mixed organic and electronic approach taken in the musical compositions. The film embraces their differences whilst seeking to find new and strange harmony between them.”

Passes are available now via yanntiersen.live-now.com.

Yann Tiersen also shared a new visualizer by Sam Wiehl for his recent single, “Poull Bojer” – watch here.

MORE ABOUT KERBER
Kerber marks a new chapter in the Breton artist’s work, one that begins with his most overtly electronic material to date. True to Tiersen’s nuanced and subtle approach, this isn’t a U-turn-like thumping piece of dance music, but instead a beautifully textured, highly immersive and thoughtfully constructed electronic world to step inside of.

It is both an evolution of what has come before as well as a new space to explore. On the new album, the piano is the source, but electronics are the environment that they exist within. Tiersen explains, “You may get this intuitive thinking of, ‘oh it's piano stuff,’ but actually it's not. I worked on piano tracks to begin with but that's not the core of it, they are not important. The context is the most important thing - the piano was a precursor to create something for the electronics to work around.”

Working in The Eskal, the studio he built on Ushant (the island where he lives, located 30 kilometers off the West coast of Brittany in the Celtic Sea), Tiersen’s process for the album’s recording was particularly involved. After spending the spring writing the piano parts, he went on to spend that summer meticulously creating a sample bank for the Elektron Octatrack using these parts as inspiration, following the chord progressions, playing them on instruments such as the Ondes Martenot, mellotron, and harpsichord. These were then subsequently transformed, reshaped, and processed. What then followed, with producer Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Einstürzende Neubauten), was three weeks of working with electronics, sampling, re-sampling, and processing sounds to create an engulfing soundscape where the tender tones of piano keys merge with gently pulsing electronics and an intense ambient milieu.
