Today, Trick Gum shares their debut single, "Hot Rifle". Trick Gum is the brand new project of legendary producer Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Angel Olsen, Yves Tymor, Kim Gordon) & his long time soul mate collaborator and cousin Jordan Benik (of cult LA band Sweaters). Stereogum premiered the track, praising it as "a synth-powered track that reminds of playfully lackadaisical ’90s alternative radio hits from the likes of Beck and Cake as well as indie oddities like Enon and Tobacco.."
"'Hot Rifle' is about being pushed to the edge and losing your faith in societal norms, the moment you give up on the rules and consider stealing a very large amount of money, and the peace that dwells within you in this moment, freed from the constraints of principle... in other words, a summer jam." - TRICK GUM
Justin Raisen and Jordan Benik were born two days apart, Justin in Miami where his father worked for YSL, Jordan in Chicago where his father was attending Moody Bible College with a major in Ancient Greek. Thick as thieves in their youth, the cousins decided to be a The Band and recorded over 80 songs in BayShore, NY, while clocked in at their no-show jobs for the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Dept. The NYC kids loved them, so they decided to move to Los Angeles.Things fell apart soon afterwards, with Justin trying out a new role as a record producer while Jordan buckled down working full time at E! Entertainment. Passion separated them, but fate brought them back together. They were soon surprised to find themselves in a Meet-Cute for the ages at the Coffee Bean by the Albertsons on Hillhurst. Initial plans for a podcast went awry, and old wounds threatened to derail their new collaboration. Luckily, they were able to find common ground in their mutual desire to bring the softest hoodies to market. Ever restless, they decided not to move to Austin. Justin & Jordan would stick it out, watch their longtime favorite, Michael Jordan’s “Come Fly With Me” and make a “rock n roll record, like we used to,”... but this time... with hustle. You can’t resurrect what never died.
Recording Hot Rifle: Inside the Studio The entire song came together in one afternoon at Justin’s studio. Justin started with a beat and Jordan fiddled around with synths until we had a groove. Then came Justin’s guitar with the warmth of a golden sun. They dranksome fantastic coffee and whipped up the lyrics, vocals took about an hour, the best songs always form easily.
The Motivation Behind the Song Hot Rifle is about being pushed to the edge and losing your faith in societal norms, the moment you give up on the rules and consider stealing a very large amount of money, and the peace that dwells within you in this moment, freed from the constraints of principle... in other words, a summer jam |
