West Coast indie pop meets Gen Z existential dread in the second output from newcomer Wallice. In a world of highlight reels, hustle culture, and collective burnout, the LA singer-songwriter's new single "23" emerges as a tongue-in-cheek contemplation on the urgency to come of age. “23” follows Wallice's debut track “Punching Bag,” an instantly relatable lo-fi anthem on unrequited friendship. The track gained immediate support from the likes of Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music and top placement on Spotify’s ‘Lorem’ playlist, with the Sunday Times Culture calling it “An organ-drenched, lo-fi indie-pop delight."

Through a series of witty, self-effacing refrains, “23” sees Wallice lament her life’s choices. She’s trapped somewhere between a premature nostalgic mourning for her youth - “tell me what is wrong with me, I miss my Ohio fake ID” - and delusions that turning a year older will bring her stability - “Maybe I’ll get married soon, and buy a house with three bedrooms, and settle down, and get a dog, and make my partner get a job.”  The track comes accompanied by a video which perfectly illustrates these frustrations, directed by Taylor Fitzgerald.

Wallice shares; "It’s hard not to compare your own professional success to that of your similarly aged peers. I dropped out of university in New York after studying Jazz Voice for a year, and my dad was VERY disappointed to say the least, so it was hard not to feel like a loser in that sense. When I was younger my best friend and I would always talk about the cute apartment we would get after high school, but I found myself at 22 still living with my mom and wanting to move out but not able to quite yet. The specific age 23 doesn’t have any milestones associated with it, but it’s more the idea of just looking forward to the future. Much like how people ‘reset’ every new year, it’s comparable to be ‘older and wiser’ with each birthday, but instead of constantly looking to the future, it is important to be happy with where you are. "

The song comes hot off the heels of her previous single “Punching Bag,” a triumphant debut which caught the attention of music tastemakers around the world. "Punching Bag
comes with a video directed by Taylor Fitzgerald which you can watch below.

Of the meaning behind her debut track, Wallice offers; “Punching Bag started with me seeing the address of an old friend pop up in my Google maps as a suggested destination, but we weren’t talking at the time so it just made me feel weird. I wanted to be able to just go to their house and hang out with them but that wasn’t an option anymore. Around the same time I had another friend get a girlfriend and completely stop talking to me.” she says. “I realized that there is such a correlation between strained friendships and romantic relationships that most people have probably felt. There’s such a strange absence of someone who used to be such a big part of your life. I made it with the thought of the protagonist (me, cause I am the one singing) being so dramatic and manipulative to do anything to see this other person, but in a completely relatable and valid way. “Left my Hydroflask in the back of your car” was a line that we thought was so silly and an obvious (perhaps pathetic) excuse to just see someone again.”

22-year-old Wallice began writing songs in middle school, lamenting secret crushes over instruments she learned to play in the school band, and armed with her trusty ipod maxed out by Weezer, Black Eyed Peas, Radiohead and Lana Del Rey. With Adrienne Lenker, Vampire Weekend, Men I Trust and The Drums on her current high-rotation, elements of both her past and present influences distill in Wallice’s sound - which feels sweet and nostalgic with a rowdy edge. Wallice’s distinct and emotive voice led her to the New School’s Jazz Vocal Performance program in New York City. After a year, she decided to pack her bags and head back home to California to focus on her own music. Wallice linked back up with producer marinelli (known for his work with spill tab), her childhood friend and longtime collaborator, who helped her develop a clearer direction for her voice and style.
