ESSENCE MAGAZINE

Friday, October 9 - Today, Yola released an empowering self penned new song “Hold On” featuring members of The Highwomen including Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby on backing vocals, alongside Sheryl Crow on piano and Jason Isbell on guitar. It was recorded during the Highwomen sessions at RCA’s Studio A and was produced by Dave Cobb. A proportion of profits from sales of the track will be donated to charities, MusicCares and National Bailout Collective. Yola launched an accompanying line of merch, with a proportion of proceeds benefiting the same organisations, for details please visit: https://www.iamyola.com/store

“Hold On”’s lyrics are inspired by conversations she had with her mother growing up. These conversations explicitly warned Yola of the systemic racism, colorism and unconscious bias she would experience in life as a Black woman.

Of the song Yola says, “‘Hold On’ is a conversation between me and the next generation of young black girls. My mother’s advice would always stress caution, that all that glitters isn’t gold, and that my black female role models on TV are probably having a hard time. She warned me that I should rethink my calling to be a writer and a singer…. but to me that was all the more reason I should take up this space. ‘Hold On’ is asking the next gen to take up space, to be visible and to show what it looks to be young, gifted and black.”

Yola will appear on Austin City Limits on Saturday October 10. Her hour-long episode will be broadcast on PBS. Please check local broadcast times
here. She will also appear on PBS’s forthcoming Great Performances: GRAMMY Salute to Music Legends show, broadcast on Friday October 16 performing Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Up Above My Head, I Hear Music In The Air.” Yola will play Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama “Elvis,” alongside Tom Hanks and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Yola will make her headline debut at The Ryman Auditorium on May 11 2021. Tickets are now on sale
here. Yola will open for Chris Stapleton across multiple shows in 2021, including performing at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 8, 2021.
