I Need A Dodge: Joe Strummer On The Run

I Need A Dodge: Joe Strummer On The Run

Coming to the US on October 16th

"Poignant doc... A snapshot of a man - not a rock star -
looking for catharsis in the most unlikely of places." - NME

Produced and Directed by Nick Hall, this is the story of Joe Strummer's self-imposed exile in Granada in 1985/6. It will be released on DVD by MVD on October 16th and comes packaged with a cassette of a Spanish radio interview with Strummer, a postcard, sticker, and pin.

"This is Joe Strummer at a crossroads in his professional and personal life. Initially his trips to Spain seemed to be little more than an anecdote but this story says so much about Joe coming to terms with life after The Clash," said Hall.
Johnny Green, The Clash's legendary road manager said of the film, "I glowed - I felt uplifted. Once again, it was as if I had spent a little time with my dear lost friend, Joe Strummer. I was hooked all through - the story is compulsive. More to the point, you have perfectly captured the brooding melancholia, that shy underside, which was a compelling component of Ol' Joe. I Need A Dodge is fabulous." The film also received a special mention at the In-Edit Festival in Barcelona.
Heading to Spain in 1985 to flee the disaster that was the implosion of The Clash version two, the band formed in the wake of Strummer firing Mick Jones and aftre Topper Headon left the band. The new line-up's Cut The Crap album had largely been shunned by both critics and the public alike andStrummer needed space. Telling a Diario De Granada interviewer that he had come "to feel the pain of the wound," upon arrival in Granada, Strummer found himself firmly subsumed into the city's musical and cultural fabric. He was welcomed with open arms by local acts 091 and bigger-fish Radio Fortuna, who all met up at the Silbar.
"When we met Joe it was like a miraculous apparition," said Jose Ignacio Lapido, 091's guitarist. It was Radio Fortuna who facilitated the purchase of a set of wheels for Strummer. Tracking down a Barreiros, essentially a European edition of the Dodge-Dart, became a mission. As Santiago Auseron, the Radio Fortuna singer said, "It looked cool, it just looked a bit mad. Which at that time suited Joe very well."
Strummer was delighted with the huge car which he thrashed around the streets of Granada and Madrid. However, having parked the car in the capital when he flew back to the UK for the birth of his daughter Lola, he forgot where it was and never saw it again. I Need A Dodge! Joe Strummer On The Run is partly the story of the search for the car, and partly the story of Strummer's own search for meaning and redemption in those wilderness years.

Strummer  launched an unsuccessful attempt to find the car, making an appeal for information on Spain's Radio 3 in 1997. With witnesses disagreeing on the colour and style of the car - agreeing only that it was registered in Oviendo - and some claiming never to have seen it, filmmaker Nick Hall's quest seems unlikely to succeed, yet his investigation does unearth the truth about this period of Strummer's life that has largely been ignored.
Installing himself in the producer's chair for the recording of 091's album, Strummer's micro-management led, rather than to the boost these star-struck musicians were hoping for, to a growing sense of disquiet and wasted studio time. The album eventually surfaced, having finished off to the record label's specification rather than the band's, and was disappointing.
The Dodge is an emblem for Strummer's time in Spain, his ambition, personal style and, in a way, the nature of those troubled days in general. When he is pulled over by the police, it is revealed that he doesn't even have a license to drive. Drawing on the recollections of his friends in London and in Spain, his partner Gaby Holford, and the members of 091 and Radio Fortuna, this a revealing story of a search for much more than just a car.
"It was an escape. He was a man on the run. He was getting away from the tension in London," saysSantiago Auseron.
Joe Strummer did, indeed, need a Dodge.

The DVD package can be pre-ordered directly through MVD here, or on Amazon here.

Sharkmuffin Gets Psychedelic in New "Chartreuse" Video

Sharkmuffin Reveal New Video for “Chartreuse” via Death + Taxes

“On their debut LP Chartreuse, Brooklyn power-punk band Sharkmuffin show that they have mastered the craft of heavy, unapologetic, sharp-pop songs.” – Impose

“It’d leave you breathless if you weren’t humming along.” NPR

“Brash and unapologetic…this is a vicious band with plenty of teeth.” Consequence of Sound

Brooklyn’s Sharkmuffin venture into the realm of psychedelia on their newest video for “Chartreuse,” which premiered on Death + TaxesThe summer-inspired music video involving mini-golf, sunbathing, and drink spiking was directed by Darkwing’s Rich Gold, and it’s in support of the group’s titular track off Chartreuse, their debut LP released earlier this month on State Capitol Records.

When asked to comment on the video, Sharkmuffin said, “If you mess with Sharkmuffin, we'll drug you and make you play in our band.” Free drugs and membership into an established band like Sharkmuffin sounds more like a Kickstarter perk than a threat.

If you’re in the New York area, make sure to welcome the duo home from their extensive tour on September 1st @ Brooklyn Bowl.

What people are saying about Beach House’s Depression Cherry:
"Reliable, virtually misstep-proof conjurers of a distinct and desirable mood….Beach House works with a simple set of ingredients — a few vintage keyboards, programmed drums, an electric guitar and the drowsily alluring voice of Victoria Legrand — to evoke a specific tone that rarely varies. And yet Depression Cherry, the Baltimore duo's fifth album in the last decade, still feels vibrant and versatile. There's sticking to a formula that works, and then there's teasing out its subtleties in surprising, consistently rewarding ways.” [First Listen] - NPR Music

“It’s another impeccably measured step forward. Their albums might be an ideal soundtrack for daydreaming, but Scally and Legrand seem remarkably clear-headed about their work.” [Best New Music] - Pitchfork

“Weeping spirals of guitar, the futility of life looped in eerie, wordless harmonies, organs, and ‘shooting star slide guitars’ blasting like lightning bolts, beckoned and sent away by Legrand’s androgynous, languid voice. Maybe Legrand writes the lyrics, but Scally senses them, he translates them into softly cooing organ lines, demanding siren burst of guitar, the loss lingering everywhere in soft white noise. All that sorcery is here, again, in full force.” - Stereogum

“For its fifth album, Depression Cherry, the pair decided to de-emphasize percussion, and the pillowy, haunting result is ideal for the encroaching autumn days.” - TIME

“The band’s understanding of their own head-in-the-clouds aesthetic and knowing where to sew in (or cut out) the stitches to keep their sound in a constant, albeit low-key, flux results in much more of a mesmerizing experience than would changing directions entirely.” [A -] AV Club

“Anyone who doesn't fall for Depression Cherry's hypnotic splendour probably just isn't a Beach House fan, or didn't live with the album long enough. But those who do will recognize this album as the sweeping, grand gesture they've been working up to giving us for the last nine years.” [9/10] - EXCLAIM!

“Beach House’s music isn’t as severe as Beckett, but it does share a similar purity, an ambition to strip art down to the privacy and insularity of a snow globe. Their most obvious ancestors are shy-minded indie bands from the 1980s and ’90s who buried themselves in sound: Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine. But there’s also something Andrew Lloyd Webber about their twinkle and swirl, the naive theatricality of dress-up and pretend. Their deepest root is in old doo-wop ballads, sweet and angelic but steaming underneath, the heat of two teenagers separated by a ruler at a bygone prom. If some bands capture the freedom and joy of youth, Beach House captures its erotic incoherence — the sense of having no clear idea how you feel but feeling it so deeply you might pass out.” Grantland

“Instead of relying mainly on guitars, their songs are built on a foundation of shimmering, droning electric organ. And, where many dream-pop vocalists are angelic, Legrand’s voice is deep, forceful, and oracular.” - The New Yorker

“Guitarist Alex Scally's extravagant melodies bloom slowly over grooves that pulse like waves; singer Victoria Legrand's vocals echo Fleetwood Mac's lush folk rock, Cocteau Twins' surreal dreams and Nico's spooky drama. The Baltimore duo's fifth album sticks to that signature sound, and go figure: A formula that might seem limiting feels instead like it can contain entire worlds.” - Rolling Stone

“On their latest, they go grandiose with weighty tunes that explore love and melancholy. Singer Victoria Legrand has a refreshingly unshowy croon that’s one of the most seductive in pop, and her gorgeous synth drones and guitarist Alex Scally’s effects-laden riffs are exquisite.” [ A-] - Entertainment Weekly

Speedy Ortiz shares Cardigans cover + On tour now

SPEEDY ORTIZ SHARES CARDIGANS COVER  "HANGING AROUND"

PLAYING HOMETOWN BOSTON SHOW ON A BOAT AUGUST 30TH

FOIL DEER OUT NOW VIA CARPARK RECORDS

Credit: Shervin Lainez

Today, Speedy Ortiz premieres an all new cover of the Cardigans' "Hanging Around" via The Boston Globe in anticipation for their upcoming Boston show on August 30th. The band is excited to be back in their hometown to perform on a boat out of Boston Harbor as part of the Rock and Blues Concert Cruise series. The ship will set sail at 1:00 p.m. for about a three hour cruise that also features Downtown Boys. Tickets to the show are available  here.

Speaking about the cover, guitarist and lead singer Sadie Dupuis shares, "In December, Speedy played a hometown residency at our beloved hangout spot Great Scott. We tried not to repeat any songs over the course of three shows--four, actually, if you include the one we played in a basement under a fake name. That meant playing at least 40 (!) original songs for our Boston pals, plus a few covers, one of which was this album track from The Cardigans' 1998 release 'Gran Turismo.' The Cardigans make really smart pop music dosed with contradictory textural choices--crunchy guitars, moody electronics, seemingly intentional tape warping. Their hits are pretty well known, and are all great, but I love "Hanging Around" for its detached, spooky lyrics. This song could be about cognitive dissonance, or it could be about some invading body snatchers--maybe both? We stayed pretty true to the original on this one, 'cuz we think the original is so good. Instruments recorded at Studio 52 by Jesse Weiss of Palehound and Grass is Green, with vocals recorded in Jesse's bedroom while staring at his Chavez poster for inspiration."
Check out Speedy Ortiz' rendition of "Hanging Around" above.  You can also find the new horror/Hausu-inspired video for "Raising The Skate" along with what the press has been saying aboutFoil Deer below and  grab a copy of the album via iTunes  here .

About Speedy Ortiz:
Speedy Ortiz said they would get the flowers themselves. What a lark! What a plunge!

When considering Massachusetts' Speedy Ortiz, that line from Virginia Woolf comes to mind. Not only for the obvious echoes to DIY, a form and function that's characterized the band's nascency, but in the proto-feminist undertones driving much of their sophomore album, Foil Deer. "I'm not bossy, I'm the boss," Sadie Dupuis sings on "Raising the Skate," invoking in spirit one half of the Carter-Knowles clan and echoing the other's wordplay. And wordplay makes sense, considering Dupuis-the band's songwriter, guitarist, and frontwoman-spent the band's first few years teaching writing at UMass Amherst. She's drawn to the dense complexity of Pynchon, the dreamlike geometry of Bolaño, the confounded yearning of Plath-all attributes you could easily apply to the band's 2013 debut Major Arcana, which fans and press alike have invested with a sense of purpose and merit uncommon in contemporary guitar rock.

The group, including Mike Falcone on drums, Darl Ferm on bass, and new addition Devin McKnight of Grass is Green on guitar, have spent the last year on an almost endless cross-continental touring jag, tagging along with the likes of T he Breeders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks , and Thurston Moore. That shift into full-time musicianship brought with it an attendant reordering of priorities when it came to songwriting, and the band members' lives in general. They would get the damn flowers themselves.

Dupuis wrote much of Foil Deer at her mother's home in the Connecticut woods, where the songwriter imposed a self-regulated exile and physical cleansing of sorts, finding that many of the songs came to her while running or swimming alone. "I gave up wasting mental energy on people who didn't have my back," she says. "Listening to our old records, I get the sense I was putting myself in horrible situations just to write sad songs. This music isn't coming from a dark place, and without slipping into self-empowerment jargon, it feels stronger."  Many of the songs deal with a similar sense of starting over, editing out the unnecessary drama. "Boys be sensitive and girls be, be aggressive," she sings on "Mister Difficult."

And while their debut album was recorded on the fly, Speedy Ortiz spent almost a month in the studio on Foil Deer. Falcone's drums are taut, mechanistic; Ferm's bass ranges from the aggressive rattle of an AmRep classic to smoother, hip-hop inspired lines. McKnight, meanwhile, lends spacier, textural riffs to complement Dupuis' wiry, melody-driven guitar style. "The demos for our songs have always had tons of small details and production experimentation, but we never had any money to pay for more than a couple days in the studio, so the songs came out very live-sounding and guitar heavy," Dupuis says. It was recorded and mixed at Brooklyn's Rare Book Room with Nicolas Vernhes (Silver Jews, Enon, Deerhunter), with the record mastered by Emily Lazar (Sia, Haim, Beauty Pill), lending a more polished sound and a pop sensibility that will stand out to existing fans and new converts alike. For all the lyrical complexity and guitar-based excursions Speedy Ortiz have built their reputation on to this point, Foil Deer has a sense of light-footed fun. What's the point of doing things yourself if you're not going to enjoy the trip?

Pee-wee Herman premieres Tijuana Panthers claymation video + album out now

TIJUANA PANTHERS SHARES NEW VIDEO  VIA PEE-WEE HERMAN'S LOG

LOS ANGELES ALBUM RELEASE SHOW

POSTER OUT NOW VIA INNOVATIVE LEISURE

Today the Tijuana Panthers release their fourth album, POSTER, via Los Angeles-based label Innovative Leisure. To celebrate the release, the Long Beach trio is also sharing a new music video for their single "Set Forth".

The video was made by a talented Tijuana Panthers fan named Anny Yi of "He Ho Let's Doh"The band, dressed as their alter-egos, go trailing through a forest, meeting various eclectic friends along the way. An original concept by Tijuana Panthers, "Set Forth" is a stop-motion animation video with sets and characters made out of play-doh. Other materials used are craft shrubbery and grass, and acrylic paintings as backgrounds. It took Anny a month and a half to handcraft the sets and characters, then shoot the video and edit it. The nature of the video fits perfectly with the bands nostalgic and introspective fourth album.

The band on the video and their inspiration behind it:

"We grew up on Saturdays in the 1980's with our babysitter H.R. Pufnstuf and our good pal Gumby once fell through the tube during the Land of the Lost theme song, but he made it out alright in the end. The Blockheads who followed, though, weren't so lucky. A girl named Penny would visit us in the playhouse...Chad would sit on Chairy, Daniel would wrestle with Randy & I would listen to Cowboy Curtis go on and on about Miss Yvonne. We were homeschooled by Mr. Herman on how to view the world around us and more importantly, how to interact with it. Pee-wee told us to "Set Forth," so we did and into the woods we ran...found our own paths, with our own friendly creatures, and together we keep bopping along down that crazy surrealist bucket. So take a look, take a listen..."

The band will be playing an album release show at The Regent in Los Angeles on September 4th. For the show the Panthers will be joined by fellow SoCal-based acts The Garden and Adult Books.

POSTER arrives right on time, to reflect on this summer and summers past. You can now purchase the album on vinyl, CD, and all digital formats via Innovative Leisure. Check out the video for "Set Forth" and full album details below.
