Michael Shannon stars in
Deerhoof’s new “Exit Only” video
Has Deerhoof finally hit their sweet spot? Now in their 20th year, they appear to have accidentally made their most accessible record, by making their most brutal. This scrappy, punky diamond-in-the-rough called La Isla Bonita, recorded in their guitarists' basement, no less, is being widely embraced: Billboard, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Mojo, Pitchfork, The Onion, and Uncut are just some of those heralding the incongruous appeal of Deerhoof's 13th album.
“Deerhoof was the band that slapped me with the truth that a rock band could be anything I wanted it to be” states Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards in her inspired review of La Isla Bonita for The Talkhouse. Deerhoof's ferocious energy and pop ingenuity are lauded in testimonials from Jonny Greenwood, Henry Rollins, and others in a recent piece on the band in The Guardian. "As many of Deerhoof's spawn (notably St. Vincent, Dirty Projectors, and TV on the Radio) have come into fruition as leaders of the indie rock world, it's even more obvious that this quartet is the source of their power,” notes New York's famedOther Music.
Tuesday Polyvinyl Records released La Isla Bonita, and the band started their tour that night in New York. "By Wednesday the audience was already singing along with the new songs. They knew all the words," says drummer Greg Saunier. As Guest Editor of The Talkhouse last week, Greg tapped an impressive string of names for some much-talked-about reviews. An acoustic session taped on Monday for Refinery29 showcased the band's inimitable chemistry. CMJ reported La Isla Bonita as the #1 most-added album on the week's college radio charts. Clearly Deerhoof has had a big week.
One wonders if It all may pale, however, to today's video premier. The so-insane-you-can’t-look-away video for the anthemic “Exit Only” stars Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Man Of Steel) as both of the characters, one tormenting the other with the vicious hooks of the La Isla Bonita track until his skin freezes and his teeth fall out. The “Exit Only” video premiered with New York Magazine’s Vulture and is available HERE to post and share!
