VIA THE FADER

In 1980, Genesis P-Orridge and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson (then of Throbbing Gristle renown) travelled to New York City to meet up at the fortified apartment, known as The Bunker, of famed beat writer and cultural pioneer William S. Burroughs and his executor James Grauerholz to starting the daunting task to compile the experimental sounds works of Burroughs, which, up until that point, had never been heard.

During those visits, Burroughs would play back his tape recorder experiments featuring his spoken word “cut-ups”, collaged field recordings from his travels and his flirtations with EVP recording techniques, pioneered by Latvian intellectual Konstantins Raudive.  Throughout the next year, P-Orridge, Christopherson and Grauerholz would spent countless hours compiling various edits, each collection showcasing Burroughs sensitive ear and keen experimental prowess for audio anomaly within technical limitations.

By the time 1981 came through, Burroughs had relocated to Lawrence, KS in which to escape the violence and mania of New York City life.  It is in Lawrence that P-Orridge and Christopherson put the finishing touches on the record that would be known as “Nothing Here Now but the Recordings”.  The album would come out in the Spring of 1981 as the final release for the shuttering Industrial Records, brought about by the dissolution of Throbbing Gristle.  The album remained out of print until 1998 when John Giorno and theGiorno Poetry Systems included the album on a multi-disc retrospective CD box set compiling the majority of Burroughs seminal recordings.

Dais Records is honored to have worked with the Estate of William S. Burroughs to finally reissue, for the first time since its original release in 1981, a proper album reissue of William S. Burroughs “Nothing Here Now but the Recordings” in its original vinyl format to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Burroughs. Fully remastered from the original master tapes in a limited edition of 1,000 vinyl copies.

Los Angeles, California - When Public Enemy's second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, was released in 1988, "it completely upended the way records are made. It challenged the concept of reinvention in recorded music," writes The Roots' Amir "Questlove" Thompson in the booklet that is included in the deluxe two-CD/DVD reissue of the album on Def Jam/Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), available now along with its well-regarded follow-up,Fear of a Black Planet, which came out just two years later. In his liner notes, Wax Poeticsmagazine editor-in-chief Andre Torres calls that album, "the brilliant bookend to a classic hip-hop trilogy... Though Millions is the more critically acclaimed and well-known, an argument could be made for Fear's triumph as the strongest album of the three."

The original LP version of Fear of a Black Planet will also be released in a collector's vinyl edition for the first time in 15 years, with a special "fade to black" 3D cover that, when turned to the left or right, turns black, with just the band's iconic cross-hairs visible.

Fear of a Black Planet, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2015, finished #300 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" and was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2005. The album is certified platinum by the RIAA for more than one million shipped, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard 200. Writes Wax Poetics editor-in-chief Torres in the liner notes, "Though it sits in the shadow of It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back, Fear of a Black Planet is a formidable contender for one of the finest hip-hop albums ever recorded."

These Deluxe Editions are part of a yearlong, ongoing celebration marking the 30th Anniversary of the iconic record label founded in 1984 by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons. Its influence and impact on modern music, culture, and lifestyle is unparalleled.

Nicole Atkins Announces Deluxe Edition

NICOLE ATKINS UNVEILS SLOW PHASER: EXPANDED DELUXE EDITION

ACCLAIMED NEW ALBUM NOW FEATURING
FULL-LENGTH BONUS DISC, LIVE AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE
OUT DECEMBER 2ND

EIGHT-SONG SET RECORDED THIS SUMMER AT HISTORIC DETROIT VENUE

ARRAY OF LIVE DATES SLATED THROUGH 2014 AND BEYOND

Nicole Atkins has announced the December 2nd digital release of Slow Phaser: Expanded Deluxe Edition, appending her internationally acclaimed new album with a second disc of previously unreleased live material.

Released earlier this year on Atkins' own label Oh'Mercy! Records (Thirty Tigers/RED)Slow Phaseris now accompanied by Live At The Masonic Temple, a full-length concert set recorded July 29th at the historic Detroit venue whilst the New Jersey-based Atkins served as special guest on Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' 2014 North American tour. The recording offers a fresh view of Atkins' myriad gifts, casting reconfigured versions of tracks from Slow Phaser alongside fan favorites from her breakthrough 2007 debut, Neptune City, and its adventurous 2011 follow-up, Mondo Amore (see attached tracklisting).

Where Atkins' own triumphant Slow Phaser headline tour featured backing from a five member ensemble, necessity demanded she travel alongside Cave with a leaner, more efficient set-up comprised of herself, guitarist Dave Rosen, and drummer Chris Donofrio. Atkins & Co. stripped away some of the intricate, inventive instrumentation found on her studio recordings and discovered an altogether different approach towards her own music. Though not a power trio in the traditional sense, the three musicians amp up the passion and energy in Atkins' already intensely emotional songcraft, employing space and stark simplicity to set her extraordinary voice at the forefront like never before. Live At The Masonic Temple immediately joins the shortlist of truly classic live albums, its force, directness and muscular performance not unlike some lost concert recording unearthed from Atkins' beloved golden age of 70s rock 'n' roll.

"The sound that we made was larger than any sound I've ever gotten from a five or six piece band," Atkins says. "Simplifying the music, bringing it down to where there's only three things happening, it really just cut away all the fat. When you hear 'The Tower' or 'Red Ropes' performed live by just three people, it's powerful stuff. With the three piece, all of my songs sound classic and evil."

Atkins - who has only just returned home from a hugely successful headline tour of Europe and the United Kingdom - will wrap up her brilliant 2014 with a number of unique live dates, including a December 18th show at Philadelphia's World Café Live, presented by WXPN 88.5. The concert is heralded by WXPN's "Vinyl At Heart" promotional campaign, with Atkins prominently featured on striking digital billboards, buses, and trains located throughout the Philadelphia metro area.

In addition, Atkins is set for an eagerly awaited headline show at Washington, DC's Rock & Roll Hotel on December 19th, followed by a very special homecoming spectacular at Asbury Park's world famous Stone Pony on December 20th. Other upcoming events include an intimate post-Christmas performance at New York's Rubin Museum of Art, slated for December 26th as well as a just announced 2015 date supporting the great Mavis Staples, scheduled for February 21st at Monmouth University's Pollak Theatre in West Long Branch, New Jersey. For regularly updated information, please visit www.nicoleatkins.com.

A neon noir tour de force of hi-def late-night pop, Slow Phasermarks Nicole Atkins' most ingenious and indelibly modern collection to date. Produced by Tore Johannson (with whom Atkins collaborated on the now-classic Neptune City) at his Malmö, Sweden studio, the album is a milestone for the acclaimed singer/songwriter, her restless creativity fully realized via the addition of some surprising colors to her already diverse paintbox.Songs like the sultry "Red Ropes" and the poptastic first single, "Girl You Look Amazing" positively swirl with day-glo danceability, the bright hues setting Atkins' distinctive creative voice in a luminous and undeniable new light. Bittersweet yet life affirming, Slow Phaser is Nicole Atkins at her confident and unpredictable best - spirited, sexy, and determinedly forward thinking.

Slow Phaser was greeted by the most ecstatic notices of Atkins' much-admired career, with The New York Daily News' Jim Farber declaring it "a super-catchy, highly danceable argument for Atkins to be seen as one of the great swaggering women of rock. In her snarky huff, Atkins recalls Chrissie Hynde. In her New York mix of hauteur and humor, she brings to mind Debbie Harry... Her voice ties it all together, with a sound sure enough to let the vulnerability of her words proudly show... Gleaming in tone, piercing in volume and unstoppable in attitude, it rips right through you."

Elsewhere, USA Today applauded Atkins' "penchant for creating enticingly mysterious pop-rock." "When Nicole Atkins sings, she sounds like Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin all rolled into one voice," enthused NPR (with host Scott Simon complimenting her for possessing "a voice that could melt the heart of a devil. Sense of humor dryer than a drought...") The Boston Globe praisedSlow Phaser's "immaculate popcraft" and commended Atkins for "releasing three remarkable albums." "Nicole Atkins has continued to push boundaries creatively," declared Paste, while The New Yorker singled out "Girl You Look Amazing" as "the rarest of things: a nutritious confection."

In the UK, The Daily Mirror awarded Slow Phaser four stars, noting the album "bursts with attitude and vitality... (Atkins') lustrous vocals, irresistible swagger and compositional ingenuity excel here." Atkins has been "blessed with a siren voice of innate and intricate grace and restraint," noted The Sunday Times, adding, "Buy this."

"For all of the twists and turns in musical directions Slow Phaser takes, Atkins negotiates them all with remarkable ease and dexterity," wrote The Line of Best Fit. "Just like her songwriting, her singing has developed and matured." "Slow Phaser is a big step forward for Atkins," exclaimed Blurt. "Lyrically her songs have never been better, and couple that with her throaty, soothing vocals and the orchestra pop music backing and this record is not only her best yet, but one of the best releases 2014 has offered so far."
