Harmony Korine A Crack-Up at the Race Riots
Harmony Korine A Crack-Up at the Race Riots, Paperback out April 16, 2013
via Drag City
A NOVEL SETTING ABOUT THE BASTARD WISHER
"It's about a race war and it
happens in Florida. And the Jewish people sit in trees. And the black
people are run by M.C. Hammer. And the whites are run by Vanilla Ice. I
wanted to write the Great American Choose Your Own Adventure novel."
--Harmony Korine, addressing a national television audience, 10/17/97
--Harmony Korine, addressing a national television audience, 10/17/97
Back in print from Harmony Korine, A Crack-Up At the Race Riots was
originally published by Mainstreet/Doubleday in 1998. Korine's first
novel presents fragments of a portrait in multimedia: print,
photographs, drawings, news clippings, handwriting, a poem, attempted
diagrams, clip art - but mostly text, including hard-luck stories,
off-and-on-color jokes, script-scraps, found letters, free rhymes, drug
flashbacks and other missing scenes, exploring the world of show-biz
with fingers prying in the cracks and feet set lightly in the black
humours of the real ol' world.
This excretion of the danglers of public life would make William Burroughs sigh and turn the page, at least...
A Crack-Up At the Race Riots also
includes some other semi/attempted/quasi lists/scripts, a few letters
from Tupac and a set of eleven suicide notes with room included for
your signature. So that's the book in a nutshell. I don't know, maybe
you had to be there. But it has become a great cult classic and it's back in print, so be there now, what the fuck?
Harmony Korine is the self-educated thirty-nine-year-old who wrote and directed the controversial films Trash Humpers, Mister Lonely, Julien Donkey-Boy and Gummo. His new film Spring Breakers
was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Korine
was raised in the carnival and lives in Tennessee with his wife and kid.
"The new heir, the man, the sweet edge of the future" - Jim Carroll, author of The Basketball Diaries
"I was struck from the very
beginning that there is a totally independent & new voice in
writing. I believe that [he] is a great talent as a writer" - Werner
Herzog

Wire's Change Become Us Streaming At Pitchfork Advance
US Summer Tour Dates Including Pitchfork Music Festival Announced
Wire's new album Change Becomes Us, out today on PinkFlag, is streaming in its entirety at Pitchfork Advance. The album is available for purchase (including special limited edition bundles) at the PinkFlag web store. Rolling Stone recently caught up with Colin Newman and said "[Change Becomes Us]
Like everything else in their varied discography, it's lyrically
challenging, melodically and rhythmically accessible and texturally
contemporary. For the first time since the Seventies, though, this one
feels like a genuine band album, as if Wire's previous stops and starts
never happened." The band has just announced a U.S. summer tour in
support of the album, which will include a performance the Pitchfork Music Festival. Tickets for the festival are on sale now.
In spring 2012, Wire's plan had been to convene at Rockfield Studios in Wales to review the rudimentary blueprints of songs that had never made it beyond a few live performances in 1979 and 1980 -
a time when the band-members were in creative overdrive yet the band
itself was disintegrating. The aim wasn't simply to resuscitate and
record old songs; in fact, many of them hadn't become proper songs in
the first place, existing only as basic ideas or undeveloped parts.
Rather, the objective was to approach that unrealized work as an
oblique strategy, a potential springboard for Wire's contemporary,
forward-looking processes - a possible point of departure for new
compositions.
This
took place with Wire firing on all cylinders, as a four-piece studio
entity again, the core line-up of Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey
now enhanced by guitarist Matthew Simms. Simms had played a key role in
helping the band to cultivate and shape its new sonic landscape
throughout the preceding year's live work. Out of the exploratory
Rockfield session and subsequent, extensive development and production
at Newman's Swim Studio, the ostensible source material became, in the
classic Wire tradition, something quite other than what it may have
once been - or what it might have become if it had been pursued in 1980.
"Love
Bends" is a case in point. Its roots lie in "Piano Tuner (Keep
Strumming Those Guitars)" - the raucous, octave-hopping number
performed in February 1980 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden and
preserved on Document and Eyewitness. But it's now morphed, improbably,
into an irresistible, totally modern pop song. "It had to be turned
into something else," explains Lewis, "because it only really had one
bit." Just as improbably, the gently lilting "Re-invent Your Second
Wheel" is tangentially connected to the notorious "Zegk Hoqp," which
was more of a one-time happening than a song at the Camden gig: mostly
shouting and banging, executed by a stage- full of Wire cronies in
funny hats. "It was written for performance, around people with
newspaper headdresses; not with music in mind," Lewis emphasizes.
Newman's songwriting and production on Change Becomes Us
reimagines the past in ways that ultimately break any substantive
connection with it, making entirely new pieces - and these songs
themselves enact Wire's restless drive to become other, often thriving
on a fundamental tension between opposing sonic characteristics. With
its stop-start, soft-hard, quiet-loud structure, "Adore Your Island"
veers between what Newman describes as "prog and unhinged punk rock,"
never quite resolving itself; the drama of "Attractive Space" hinges on
a progressive splitting of the song's personality, between its calm,
expansive, anthemic orientation and an increasing sense of intensity
and claustrophobia.
Change Becomes Us
encapsulates the paradoxical essence of Wire's creativity. The tendency
of these new songs to refuse a single, settled identity is emblematic
of the band's ever-evolving aesthetic - one that's always hinged on
sustained tensions and oppositions: between the familiar and the
unfamiliar, the comfortable and the unsettling, the melodic and the
brutal, the cerebral and the visceral, the smart and the moronic, the
obvious and the inscrutable, the rational and the absurd. This
intrinsic, core ambivalence generates the essential otherness that has
characterized Wire's most memorable, distinctive work - from the
epochal innovations of Chairs Missing and 154 to the electronic-pop deconstructions of A Bell Is A Cup to Send's postmodern-punk expressionism and the widescreen lyricism of Red Barked Tree. Change Becomes Us
is an undeniable part of that illustrious lineage. Definitely more than
just a good idea at the time. - Wilson Neate (Author of Read &
Burn: A Book About Wire)

REVEALS NEW BAND MEMBERS
ANNOUNCES NEW FILM NEVER FOREVER, WATCH THE TRAILER NOW

Following
their run of European tour dates this past fall with Animal Collective,
Prince Rama are announcing their return to Europe this spring. This
trip, however, sees a new incarnation of the band, featuring new band
members Christopher Burke and Michael Collins, on bass and synthesizer,
respectively. Those who have seen the band play live in the past 6
months will recognize Christopher Burke, as he's been performing with
them since this past August. Those that have been following Prince Rama
since their inception will recognize Michael Collins, who was
previously a member of the band until taking a hiatus in 2010 to pursue
his solo career. Before hitting Europe, the band will showcase its new
lineup at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on March 28th.
In conjunction with the new lineup and tour dates, the band is proud to announce their forthcoming film. Never Forever is the first ever Now Age psych-opera starring Prince Rama and featuring songs off their latest apocalyptic pop album, Top Ten Hits of the End of the World. Shot in only 5 days and directed by Lily X. Wahrman (Astral Projects), Never Forever takes you on a free-form
journey through dimensions both surreal and virtual-- from the
glamorous, twisted world of a post-apocalyptic gym queen to the
nightmarish breakdown of a VR robot turned pop star. If Alejandro Jodorowsky was reborn in 2127 and crashed his motorcycle into the decayed set of Thriller, it still wouldn't come close to the terror that is Never Forever. Watch the film's trailer below along with all upcoming tour dates. For more info on the film visit neverforeverfilm.com

White Fence - Cyclops Reap
White Fence - Cyclops Reap
Street Date, April 9th, 2013, Castleface
“I
have cyclops vision now. But I’m not a giant. I changed my name and
body only, and stabbed my social nous in the right ear. I still read
fear but there are no police this year. I can repeat the same dream. I
can let birds talk to me. I’m in jail. I have love and a whistle. I lay
where the lotus lay and then spring the frozen flowers on any giving
day. I apologize to those put in the trees, but I was gathering the
Cyclops reap.
In the span of 4 1/2 years. I’ve
lived in two different apartments and have used three different rooms
during this time. All in Echo Park, Los Angeles, CA, only a couple
miles from one another. After the death of my father in 2008 I started
writing and recording non-stop in these rooms. I can’t say it was
directly because of that trauma, but I think deep down it might have
much to do about it. This record was initially going to be a collection
of the many songs trapped between the 4 White Fence LP’s. As i was
putting that together, there were more coming. a better crop. i
couldn’t stop. So, instead of a retrospective i said “Fuck It”. might
as well use the most current songs of the bunch. For the exception of
“Make Them Dinner At Our Shoes” which is from 2009.”

Hands Announce April Echo Residency
Hands Announce April Echo Residency Presented By 98.7 FM

Debut Album Synesthesia Out April 30 On Kill Rock Stars
Debut Album Synesthesia Out April 30 On Kill Rock Stars
Listen: White Arrows' "Roll Forever" via Buzzbands LA or SoundCloud
Download: "Trouble" via Stereogum
Hot on the heels of a successful trip to SXSW, where ABC News
included the quartet in their feature on "7 Emerging Artists On The
Rise" Hands is pleased to announce their April Residency at Los
Angeles' The Echo. The band will be playing shows in support of their
debut full length, Synesthesia, due April 30 via Kill Rock
Stars. The residency is presented by 98.7 FM and will take place every
Monday in April. Additionally the band just released a remix of White
Arrows' "Roll Forever." You can listen to the track at BuzzbandsLA or via SoundCloud. Synesthesia is now available for pre-order. All upcoming shows are listed below.
Hands
makes music like a rip tide, swirling in overlapping loops and riffs,
slowly enveloping you. The group's members - Geoff Halliday, Ryan
Sweeney, Sean Hess and Alex Staniloff - craft their hypnotic sound from
a single dropping note that builds into a reverberating roar that
crashes over you like a wave. It's a mesmerizing trick that they pull
off on their debut LP, Synesthesia. Songs like "Videolove" and "Trouble"
show Hands' innate ability to blend instruments and electronics into a
deep texture that moves ethereally through genres. Hands moves from
rock to synth-pop to skyrocketing stadium anthem, often within the same
song. The interplay of Sweeney's esoteric guitar riffs, Hess' technical
tempos, Staniloff's thumping bass and Halliday's soaring vocals and
affected keyboards help Hands build a dynamic atmosphere, where a
lesser band would only manage empty atmospherics.
A
relative newcomer to the LA scene, Hands began as a two-piece from
Philadelphia before Halliday and Sweeney headed west and added the low
and thump of Hess and Staniloff. The band made a mark on the scene
immediately, quickly playing packed shows across the country including
stops at SXSW, CMJ and Deluna Fest, headlining Echo Park Rising, sessions with Daytrotter, and a west coast jaunt with Maps and Atlases.
Hands' ability to win over fans with their feverish live show and
dance-party-ready sound has already earned them opening spots for the
likes of Deerhoof, DeVotchKa, Foster the People and Kimbra as well as playing shows to sold out crowds at venues across LA.
For now, Hands' graceful and danceable indie rock is still under the radar, as evidenced by their spot in TIME Magazine's 11 Bands You Don't Know (But Should) List,
but they are quickly rising to the surface, bringing their melodies and
thumping beats with them. Over the past year, Hands has built a devoted
following for their evolving palette of sounds, soaring melodies, and
complex looping song structures. With overwhelming responses to first
listens of the record and Hands hitting the road for most of 2013,
surely this is the year that Hands will start to make waves.

THE DREAM SYNDICATE TO PERFORM FIRST NORTH AMERICAN SHOW
THE DREAM SYNDICATE TO PERFORM FIRST NORTH AMERICAN SHOW IN 25 YEARS AT WILCO’S SOLID SOUND FESTIVAL
Fresh off of last September’s successful reunion tour of Spain, the Dream Syndicate will play its
first North American show since 1988 at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival at
Mass MoCa in North Adams, Massachusetts on June 22, 2013, just a few
weeks after the band wraps up a nine-city tour of Europe the month
before.
The band’s Spanish shows last fall were named Best Live Show of the Year by the influential Ruta 66 magazine, finishing ahead of gigs by (in order) Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and The Stooges. (Click here for a video clip of “The Days of Wine and Roses” from El Sol in Madrid, Spain, September 2012.)
“I went into the Spanish shows with a little bit of caution,” says
singer/guitarist Steve Wynn. “I’m really proud of what we did the
first time around and wouldn’t want to do anything to tarnish or
diminish our reputation. But I was so excited to see that the new
shows not only replicated our sound and style but actually picked up on
the dangerous, random, unhinged edge that was what I loved about being
in the band in the first place.”
The band’s current lineup features singer/guitarist Wynn and
drummer Dennis Duck, the two members who spanned the group’s entire
seven-year career as well as bassist Mark Walton, who was in the band
for its final two records and nearly all of their US and world tours.
Guitarist Jason Victor who has played with Wynn in the Miracle 3 since
2001 will round out the 21st Century lineup.
The Dream Syndicate made its splash in 1982 with the debut album
“The Days of Wine and Roses,” which is often cited among the top
records in rock history and has been named as a major influence by such
bands as Nirvana, Yo La Tengo, the Japandroids, and the Black Crowes,
among many others. The appearance at the Solid Sound Festival is the
only US appearance booked for 2013.
THE DREAM SYNDICATE - TOUR SCHEDULE:
